This image shows a stone formation here at Upper Franconia, which was made last year as a wonderful photographic spot. It was build by a man as a tribute to Stonehange.
The first linden avenue was planted between 1662 and 1663 during the reign of Margrave Christian Ernst. The avenue was part of the renovations designed to transform the nearby former Himmelkron Monastery into a hunting lodge for the margraves. Paille-Maille, a game of sledgehammer or barrel rolling, was played there. Similar avenues existed at many castles at that time.
The avenue in Himmelkron was famous in its time and was described as the longest and most beautiful in Europe. The pastor and chronicler Johann Ernst Teichmann reported on the avenue in 1739. Margravine Wilhelmine mentioned it in her memoirs. In 1792, the avenue was felled by Prussian soldiers, despite popular opposition, in order to balance the state budget. On October 17, 1986, 160 trees were replanted. On April 28, 1992, District President Erich Haniel planted the last linden tree to commemorate the felling 200 years earlier. In 2016, the avenue was an outpost of the Bayreuth State Garden Show.
Paille-Maille, known in England as Pall Mall (also spelled Baille-Maille, Palle-malle, Jeu de Mail) was a ball game of the 16th and 17th centuries and a precursor to both croquet (also known as Krocket in German) and today's Swingolf. It is a precision sport played on hard courts (in contrast to croquet, which is played on grass).
