Faith is a Gift

Happy Easter to those who celebrate. I grew up celebrating Easter when I was a kid but organized religion really doesn't appeal to me at this time politically. I'd like to believe that there is a guiding force but it's hard to see it the way things are headed. Nothing new there....but each day seems to bring more horror than wonder.

I just loved the essence of this nun's sense of self, though, and I was a little envious of that look of joy and relief about trusting in a higher power and maybe also the world. Of course, in Florence, Italy everywhere you look seems like an actual Magritte painting so I can't say I blame her. Plus, let's not discount the role of good food in its ability to lift our spirits!

This is the approx. 8 mile hiking trail to the Havasupai Reservation inside the Grand Canyon. Early morning next day on the Havasupai trail, preparing to depart down the canyon after spending the night on this rock ledge under an overhang. We had sleeping bags but no tents or tarps. A small fire to ward off the desert chill at this altitude on a clear night. The view is looking back up towards our departure point, Clifftop (out of view). It was going to be a long climb out. 07 May 1979.

I call pictures like this "pictures of nothing", those empty in-between places as we travel through a landscape. But to other eyes they are far from empty. A friend mentioned "we see a desert. Native Americans see a kitchen”. Taken from the moving van.

This is the departure point for the approx. 8 mile hiking trail to the Havasupai Reservation inside the Grand Canyon. Taken late afternoon. Today, nearly 45 years later I noticed the building on the cliff edge on the right! At the time we were concentrating on getting down the first descent and finding a suitable place to camp before it got dark. We weren't carrying tents or even tarps, just food and drink plus cameras. It was very warm to hot during the day.

The white-painted stepped cement facade building on the left is still there when I looked in Google street view, November 2023. Everything else looks different. We stopped here briefly to refuel, on our way to the Supai Reservation.
