Nearly Reddy

Quantock Motor Services' ex Cumberland ECW bodied Leyland "Titan" TD4, dating from 1936, made the long trip from its Somerset base to appear at the Workington Transport Heritage Trust's May 4-5th "Leyland National 53" event in Whitehaven, the town that once hosted the headquarters of its original owners.
Even better, it was rostered to take part in the free shuttle services laid on by the organisers to move people around the locale, making it possible to get, not only some static shots, but also some "in service" photos.

"The Hub" was the centre of operations for the weekend.
In this shot 291 has new to Stagecoach Cumberland Volvo B10 K779DAO for company, prior to its first run to St. Bees. The former 20779 is now owned by the WTHT, having latterly operated for The Big Lemon.

Having almost completed its first 20 minute circuit of the town, 291 is seen on Whitehaven's Scotch Street.

Westmoreland Workmen

BRM596 is a 1936 Leyland Titan TD4 new to Cumberland Motor Services as fleet number 291 with a Massey body and rebodied by ECW in 1950.
This one saw further service with Barton of Chilwell before being sold for preservation and a few owners later being restored by long time enthusiast and preservationist Steve Morris from Somerset.
Seen here on a rather fine Easter Sunday at Brough Sowerby with a goodly load as it heads towards Kirby Stephen.

Survivor

The fantastic Leyland "Titan" TD4, new to Cumberland Motor Services in 1936, is seen at Winton on its way to Kirkby Stephen railway station.
From new it carried a Massey body but had a replacement body fitted in 1950 by ECW, as hard use and limited maintenance during World War 2 had left the original somewhat careworn. It was then renumbered to No.291 from No.132 and operated from Wigton depot, until withdrawal in 1959, whereupon it passed to Barton in Nottinghamshire.
The bus has recently been fully restored to 1950s condition by Stephen Morris at Quantock Motor Services in Somerset, and spent the weekend operating shuttles between Brough & Kirkby Stephen at the Eden Classic Vehicle Group's Easter Rally.
On the 3rd & 4th of May, it'll be back out my way in West Cumbria operating town shuttles in Whitehaven as part of the Leyland National 53 celebrations.

Semi-topless in Southport.

Its good to see one of our most quirky creations still extant, even if its working days are behind it now.
Many years ago we converted Alexander PS bodied Volvo B10M R928 XVM to semi-open top for Quantock Motor Services for their Minehead to Lynmouth service. It was specified that we painted it in a Ribble-esque scheme to match their similary painted new Scania open top double deck.
The bus has passed through several owners since until coming to rest with the good folks at the Barrow Bus Preservation Group who painted it back into the Ribble inspired livery. They went through many heartaches with electrical gremlins relating to gear selection, but (at the risk of being proved wrong!) it now appears to be a dependable performer again.
Here it is travelling along Southport Promenade last Sunday with the ornate Convalescent Hospital in the background.
