Who remembers or knows the Ace Cafe? by Chris Firth of Wakey.

Who remembers or knows the Ace Cafe?

Established in London on the North Circular Road in 1938 and celebrated by the operators as the World's most prominent and long established 'petrol head' meet, the cafe has an interesting history. Having been bombed in World War 2 it was demolished before being reopened in 1949. By 1969 the motor car was becoming the prominent mode of transport so the cafe closed. Step forward to 1994 when a bikers reunion was held, plans were made and a small scale operation recommenced in 1997. Full opening of the post war premises commenced in 2001 and the business now booms.

So why have I uploaded a photo taken in Kuala Lumpur? It seems that the business has an international reputation and now has five sites scattered across the world (a sixth is due to be opened shortly in Sanford, Florida). Kuala Lumpur is one such site, no doubt the smallest but it is doing its bit to engender the spirit of proper motorcycling. We just stumbled on the cafe as we made our way back to our hotel one night.

The bikes here were a mix and even included a scooter. A couple of Triumphs and a few unrecognisable cafe racers were also present as well as this Indian built Royal Enfield Interceptor. This 650cc bike is near enough a replica of the 1950's Redditch built 750cc model.

The Royal Enfield Bullet was originally a British overhead valve single cylinder four-stroke motorcycle made by Royal Enfield in Redditch, West Midlands, but now produced by Royal Enfield Motors, the successor to the British company, at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in India.

The Bullet was updated in 1997 in the face of ever increasing European emission specifications. The 500s had been fitted for some time with an induction pulsed pump to draw in fresh external air and mix it into the exhaust header to convert carbon monoxide into less harmful carbon dioxide, thus lowering emissions. When existing stocks of motorcycles were all sold the British-design engine Bullet became no longer available. All new models exclusively featured the AVL 'lean-burn' engine. The introduction of a five-speed, left foot change gearbox meant that Royal Enfield could 'fix' one of the long-standing quirks of the Bullet design; the original foot-brake is on the left-side while the gearchange is on the right (as was the custom with British bikes).

This bike was offered, at the British Motorcycle Museums, H + H Auction 6th April 2022 selling for £ 2,760 including buyers premium
