While the previous day had optimal temperatures and wind conditions, today was hotter and very windy. Nonetheless, the same two guys and myself ventured onto an expansive dolomite glade system in search of reptiles. After little success, we visited an area on a huge, Southeast-facing glade and one of us was fortunate enough to turn up two young groundsnakes. This snake was very flighty upon capture, but would hide under any available cover and thus I was able to get pictures.

While the weather trended towards hotter temps for many days prior, a storm system moved through two days before this one and the high only reached the 60's. It was a partly sunny day with the occasional light breeze. On a Southwest facing dolomite glade, this remarkable snake was found one terrace down from the very top of a bald knob. It was flipped under a thin, flat rock sealed to the ground with a little moisture underneath. Upon capture it was flighty, having warmed up from the little sun coming through the thin veil of clouds. It did position itself nicely when I put my lense cap over it.

Myself and a couple friends set out on a partly sunny morning to look for snakes on a heavily forested dolomite bald knob (glade) in a deciduous forest. In open parts of the glade we had a lot of success finding snakes, such as this one observed coiled up under the edge of a large, flat rock sticking out from under a cedar tree. Upon discovery it moved around a lot but did eventually sit still for this shot.

Even if you're not a fan of snakes, you have to admit that this one is beautiful - North Mountain, Phoenix Mountains Preserve, Arizona

After a week of hot and rainless days, the glades were alarmingly vacant. It was mostly sunny early in the morning, but for the first three hours no snakes at all were flipped under rocks or observed on the crawl. After flipping for several more hours at another site, this snake was found under a large flat rock partially embedded in the ground on the top of a bald knob. At this point there had been cloud cover for almost an hour, and it was lightly drizzling. This snake rarely sat still. After release a storm rolled in.
