Reconstructed warp-weighted loom at Wikingerdorf Haithabu in Busdorf, Germany.
Warp-weighted looms are probably the earliest type of loom, used since the Neolithic period.
Archaeological finds of loom weights have been made at the Haithabu site and it is assumed that the Viking trade settlement supplied its textile demand almost entirely from its local production. By the 11th century, the warp-weighted loom had, however, been replaced by treadle-controlled looms.
