Willie Hugh Nelson (born April 29, 1933) is an American singer, guitarist and songwriter. He was one of the main figures of the outlaw country subgenre that developed in the late 1960's as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound and member of country supergroup The Highwaymen, along with fellow singers Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. Nelson has acted in over 30 films and co-authored several books making him one of the most recognized artists in country music.
Nelson was born in Abbott, Texas which is just 10 miles south of Hillsboro, Texas. He wrote his first song at age seven and joined his first band at ten. Later, he attended Abbott High School, where he was a halfback on the football team, guard on the basketball team, and shortstop in baseball. He also raised pigs with the Future Farmers of America. While still in high school, he sang and played guitar in The Texans, a band formed by his sister's husband, Bud Fletcher. The band played in honky-tonks, and also had a Sunday morning spot at KHBR in Hillsboro. The mural above is painted on the side of a multi-story building located just off of court square in Hillsboro as well. It features Willie in the later part of his life with his long braids and the iconic cowboy hat.
"I used to work in the cotton fields a lot when I was young. There were a lot of African Americans working out there. A lot of Mexicans - the blacks and the whites and the Mexicans, all out there singing, and it was like an opera in the cotton fields, and I can still hear it in the music that I write and play today."
