March 5. 2025, at Big Cypress National Preserve, Collier, Monroe, & Miami-Dade counties, Florida, United States.
Loop Road in Big Cypress National Preserve passes through 20 miles (32 km) of wilderness, including Cypress Swamps, which host many plant and animal wildlife species. The numerous non-parasitic air plants (bromeliads) shown in this photo provide a breeding habitat for frogs and insects, which, in turn, become food sources for snakes, lizards, and birds.
Came across this whimsical plant at the lake where we saw the cute ducks. It’s so pretty and adds so much character to the trees 🌳

ℹ️ Spanish Moss, not actually moss, is an epiphytic plant meaning it grows on the surface of another plant and absorbs everything it needs from the air. To put it in simpler terms this is an Air Plant! This plant supports entire ecosystems, providing habitat for insects, birds, and even small mammals ️

When asked to imagine bromeliads, most minds quickly tend to envision charismatic rosette arrangements tucked into nooks and growing from forks in trees. However, in the United States, the family Bromeliaceae is represented by several genera, the genus Tillandsia, the air plants, being the most wide-spread and speciose in the country. Like all other Tillandsia, T. recurvata, a species ranging from the Desert Southwest and into the West Indies, is an epiphytic plant, deriving structural, rather than nutritional, support from other large plants, such as live oaks (gen. Quercus) and other large shade trees. Though not well-regarded as a flowering plant, T. recurvata does sport small brilliant blue-to-purple blooms that grow from spiking stalks, characteristic of the bromeliad family. To many, these plants are considered unattractive and are often pruned or removed from other plants and many man made structures including power lines and street lamps.
Taken at Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo when I visited with my father in June; nice to take him out & give him a bit of respite from caring for my mother. He'd never visited this place before & loved how the butterflies would actually land on you. We saw lots of caterpillars in the foliage too,
The eagle-eyed among you might notice that there is actually a butterfly in this shot. Not sure of the species, maybe a Blue Morpho? The air plants looked very healthy in the humid atmosphere HBM!
