land of the Rougaroo

The History of the Rougarou

The legend of the rougarou has been a part of Cajun folklore for centuries. It is said to have originated in French Canadian folklore, brought to Louisiana by French settlers who migrated to the area in the 18th century. The name “rougarou” is derived from the French words “loup garou,” which means “werewolf.”

According to legend, the rougarou is a human who has been cursed, transforming into a terrifying creature with the body of a man and the head of a wolf or dog. The transformation is said to occur when a person breaks a Lenten vow, leading to a curse that can only be lifted after 101 days.

note: Of course, this isn't the real 'Cajun' area of the State, but you get the idea... ;)

This small swamp takes on a whole new feeling of stark loneliness in the Winter. The unprocessed photo looks almost black and white, but a bit of slider magic brings out the few colors that are there.

It was the real and actual Withlacoochee River in the late afternoon of a warm November day.

"This pretty river can get withma-coochee anytime it wants!" I wisecracked to my companions in the Creeks and Rivers Picture Collectors' Club.

Might we ever expect the Withlacoochee River to be as beauteous as it is during autumn.

DELIGHTFUL RAPIDS of the WITHLACOOCHEE RIVER with CYPRESS KNEES.

This place is so pretty, why, I believe the U.S. federal government ought to seize many thousands of acres of land for a national park here: the Withlacoochee River National Park in southern Georgia, America's newest national park. Pay off the landowners and seize their land and put in a national park.
