Taking the original 6x6 scanned negative there is plenty of scope for cropping if required. Certainly a lot more than with the much smaller 35mm negatives.
The beautiful Princes Square is home to a large collection of old trees and a vintage fountain.
Dryland Agriculture, Jimbour, Darling Downs
Sorghum, cotton, maize, wheat, barley, chickpeas, and mung beans are grown in abundance in this district.
This summer crop is mature sorghum, soon to be harvested. Other fields of sorghum nearby were recently planted and were a sea of green, Produced exclusively for animal consumption, the majority of this grain crop provides food for beef, dairy, pig and poultry, with a small percentage used in domestic pet food.
Sorghum planting occurs between September and January, and will be harvested between December and May. This is a January photograph.
Cotton has a long process from sowing to harvesting (180-200 days), cotton is sown in spring, grown over the summer months, and harvested into bales over autumn. Row spacing depends on the soil moisture in dryland areas such as this area photographed.
Barley demands less of the soil than wheat. Barley is grown, and its grain harvested for livestock feed (starch to gain weight), and also for malting and brewing (converted to sugars for fermentation).
Chickpeas are a legume and are rotated on fields with wheat and barley. One of the original superfoods, chickpeas offer double the level of protein compared to wheat and triple the level of protein found in rice. 99% of the chickpeas grown in Australia is exported, principally to India. This lentil is used as dahl.
Mung beans are also a grain, though commonly marketed as a vegetable. Like chickpeas, most of the production (95%) is exported.
This mono-scene is from the northern Darling Downs, Queensland.
