100205_055944_5097 Where Will A Stride Take Me? (Fri 05 Feb 10)

Alfred Street, Circular Quay, Sydney NSW

It was a dark and rainy morning, but there was an interesting interplay of light between the illuminated advertisements on the street furniture.

Before me, a Johnnie Walker ad asks "Where will a stride take you?"

Reflected from behind me, another ad suggests that the answer might be the Bleak City Comedy Festival... and who knows, it may be right. Either way, it's a useful reminder that I need to be taking more strides, more often.

In between the two... yes, that's me. Or my silhouette, anyway, which is as close as you'll come to seeing an actual self portrait in these galleries.

In an act of serendipity rather than planning, the guy on the left of frame is also engaged in a stride, though his is merely taking him to the other side of Alfred Street from Circular Quay railway station.

For those who doubt the advantages of doing a PAD project, there is no way on earth I would have attempted a shot like this hand held a month ago. (Though I have to admit a small amount of surprise that it turned out as (relatively) well as it did.) I took some additional shots which were "closer in" to the ad making it much clearer, but I prefer the "tunnel" effect that the bus shelters and the road gave in this one even though it was at the price of legibility.

Dotonbori Canal

The vibrant Dotonbori Canal, the glowing centerpiece of Osaka’s entertainment district, comes alive at night with dazzling lights and reflections. This iconic waterway, originally constructed in the early 1600s as part of an ambitious commercial and transportation project during the Edo period, continues to define the soul of the city. As seen in this image, the canal’s waterfront promenade, lined with restaurants, shops, and nightlife venues, exudes an irresistible energy that blends historic charm with Osaka’s modern flair.

In the spotlight is the eye-catching Ebisu Tower, the Ferris wheel wrapped around the building—a unique architectural marvel symbolizing Osaka’s love for quirky, bold designs. The colorful neon lights adorning both sides of the canal, including the flamboyant advertisements, have become part of the area’s identity, illuminating the water’s surface with a kaleidoscope of colors. Lantern-lit boat rides glide along the canal, offering a serene vantage point to enjoy the chaotic beauty of Dotonbori.

The pedestrian boardwalk, the Tombori River Walk, runs parallel to the canal, providing the perfect setting for an evening stroll, people-watching, and discovering hidden gems—from street food stalls selling takoyaki and yakitori to small izakayas brimming with locals. The canal has played host to centuries of trade, entertainment, and cultural exchange, evolving into the lively hotspot we know today.

Whether you’re exploring under the electric glow of neon signs or hopping on a boat tour to admire the sights from the water, Dotonbori Canal embodies the beating heart of Osaka—a vibrant, unforgettable mix of history, architecture, and nightlife.

Sidewalk views: Closing time, finally! - or: Level zero

An somehow classic, silhouetted view towards the staircase of one of the new office buildings at Munich Werksviertel at closing time. I was a little lucky with the person passing by as the lights in the staircase went off every few minutes :)

I like the capture due to its clear lines and simplicity. I hope you like it, too :)

Former Go Ahead London WVL179 Reg LX05 FBV in the road outside Mardens shortly after arrival.
This has the unusual feature of illuminated advertising on the off side, which the driver has kindly turned on for this photo.
Sadly it was still relatively light when I took the picture.
