Enchanted Rock

Enchanted Rock.
I wanted to enjoy an enchanted day
Life events often unfold that way
To walk around and savor views of nature’s wildness
We’ll never get enough, but it is quite special nevertheless.

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one late morning while enjoying some time in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Here I wanted to capture a wider angle view of the famous granite monadnock. The greens and yellows of the nearby trees and plantlife would be a color contrast and balance to the blues and whites of the skies above.

Devils Tower Rising Above a Forested Slope (Devils Tower National Monument)

An idea for an image I got while researching from other photographers on places to visit and hike while at Devils Tower National Monument. This was a roadside stop on my way to walk the Joyner Ridge Trail just up the road and a view looking to the southeast.

I'd Started My Trip at This Point and Finished it Here (Mount Rushmore National Memorial)

When I showed up that Thursday afternoon in South Dakota, the skies were heavily overcast and I couldn't see very far, much less see any of Mount Rushmore or its sculptured faces. As I was leaving South Dakota about a week later, I had a chance to finally see and take in the full breath of the memorial and the mountain as if on display...

This Looks Like a Nice Place for a Photo (Theodore Roosevelt National Park & Preserve)

A view looking to the west-northwest while hiking along the Painted Canyon Trail in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. What I wanted to capture here was a sweeping view across this portion of the national park to that canyon wall and hill off in the distance. Another reason for angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward was because the sun was almost directly ahead, so keeping it focused slightly downward helped to minimize any lens flares that I had noticed. For this image, I used a tripod to mount my Nikon SLR camera and then used a CamRanger so that I could meter and compose the image captured.

A conversion to black & white using Silver Efex Pro 2 where I used some color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.

If One Has Loneliness, One Can Find Company Amongst the Trees and Still Waters (Cuyahoga Valley National Park)

With another image I captured at this spot at Indigo Lake, I wanted to include a more balanced image of the forest and the reflections off the still waters. Here I decided to zoom in with the focal length and focus on the tree growth present on the far side of the lake. While the reflections were amazing to take in, I felt focusing on the trees was just's that sight to want to soak in. I was able though to include some of the reflections as kind of a small compliment to fill up the bottom portion of the image while minimizing the more overcast skies above.

Morning Sunlight Casting Shadows Across the Badlands at Panorama Point (Badlands National Park)

An idea I got from another photographer while planing a trip to Badlands National Park and the nearby Dakotas area. For this image, I used a tripod to mount my Nikon SLR camera and then used a CamRanger so that I could meter and compose the image captured. I found that and then making manual adjustments to the shutter speed gave me better feedback for an image captured. I later used some CEP filters in Capture NX2 (Low Key, Polarization and Graduated Neutral Density) which seemed to best bring colors. shadows and tones even with the bright sunlight as I faced that morning at this overlook point.

Minute by Minute, Time Goes on, but Some Things Are Left to Endure (Cuyahoga Valley National Park)

A view looking to the east-northeast from the backside of Everett Covered Bridge. Because of the overcast skies, I decided to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward, capturing a more sweeping feel with the path to my front as it led to the bridge with the forest of trees all around. I worked with control points and color control points in Capture NX2 to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted. I then added a Foliage and Darken/Lighten Center CEP filter to give that little bit extra for the final image.

A Bridge Crossing of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park

While definitely not your typical national park image (or at least typical of the ones in the western US), I like this one image in using the bridge of the Ohio Turnpike at it crossed over Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Maybe another trip, I'll have a blue sky setting to complement this setting and image...

Long Exposure Setting for Blue Hen Falls in Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Here I pulled in the focal length to zoom in on the view of the famous waterfall in this national park. I set up my Nikon SLR camera on a tripod and used a CamRanger hooked into my iPhone to compose and then expose the image captured.

I decided to try out this "Ansel Adams Look" I'd read about in Jason Odell's book on Capture NX2. The idea is to work with the LCH editor, making some adjustments, and then use a Black point and White point before converting to black & white.

A zoomed in image I captured while walking around the Station Road Bridge area as I headed out to enjoy an early afternoon stroll along the Ohio and Erie Canal Path. Waters Flowing Over Brandywine Falls (Cuyahoga Valley National Park)

A sideward view looking across the creek and then falls. Because of the rains the day prior, I didn't need to close have a longer shutter speed even with a variable ND filter I was using. Composing the image was a matter of lining of the creek and waterfalls while using some of the nearby trees and plantlife to complete this setting in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I worked with control points and color control points in Capture NX2 to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted. I then added a Foliage and Darken/Lighten Center CEP filter to give that little bit extra for the final image.

Setting Up for a Sunset (Badlands National Park)

Given the overcast skies I'd experience most of that day in Badlands National Park, seeing sunlight from a late afternoon sun was a sight to take in! Here I set up my tripod at Pinnacles Overlook and used an iPhone app called PlanIt! Pro to point my Nikon SLR camera at the right azimuth for a sunset. With all the time I had then, I also found it useful to better familiarize myself with a new piece of remote equipment and software I'd purchase, a CamRanger. With that, I could meter and have a more immediate feedback on an image captured than off the LCD screen. I could in essence look at the image and see how it move me. What I liked was the view across the nearby badlands formations with its patterns and shapes. Beyond were the greens of the prairie grass. While thin across the image, it was enough to add a layer before the blues and even some oranges in the skies above.
