Zone : Complexe les ailes

Installation

Bufo martyi

A juvenile Bufo martyi from near Kartabo, Guyana. This animal was discovered crossing a foot path in primary forest around midday. It has adopted a defensive posture by pulling up its arms and legs and lying flat and motionless. This dead leaf mimicry allows it to be easily overlooked by visual predators.

Bufo martyi

An adult Bufo martyi from near Kartabo, Guyana. This is an explosive breeder, appearing almost out of nowhere, breeding in a frenzy, and disappearing just as quickly. We passed a puddle in the middle of a logging trail nightly for almost a week without seeing the first sign of one of these toads. After a brief, early evening thundershower, we were greeted by a strange call coming from the vicinity of this puddle. Upon approaching, at least a dozen males (including this one) were discovered calling and several others were already amplecting with females. Due to the threat of continued rain, we left our cameras back in camp. The next evening when we returned with cameras, this was the only pair (along with two other males) left in the puddle. Despite identical situations over the course of the next week, we never saw another breeding aggregation or heard any more males calling.

Bufo martyi

An amplecting pair of Bufo martyi from near Kartabo, Guyana. This species is sexually dimorphic. Females are much larger than males. The females also have much larger, broader crests extending from the sides of the head than males. This was the only pair left in a puddle in the middle of a logging road which was literally writhing with toads less than 24 hours before.

Bufo martyi

An adult male Bufo martyi from near Kartabo, Guyana. Among the most variable species of frog I have ever seen, this species comes in an unlimited number of colors and patterns. This particular individual looked remarkably like some of the dead leaves on the forest floor that it was discovered in.

Bufo martyi

A small adult Bufo martyi from along the Partang River, northeast of the village of Imbaimadai, Guyana. This specimen was discovered hopping across a foot path early in the morning after a night of rain.

Bufo martyi

An adult male Bufo martyi from near Kartabo, Guyana. This specimen was discovered in between some buttresses of a tree as we were setting up camp.

Bufo martyi

An adult male Bufo martyi from near Kartabo, Guyana. This species waqs recently split off from the Bufo margaritifer complex. This formerly widespread species has long been known to represent a complex of several species, some easily told apart morphologically, others not so much. With the use of molecular data, this complex of species is slowly being teased apart.
