Forest, Farm and Flight

The bush of northern New South Wales and farms on the slopes of Mt Somerville are crested by the geodesic communication dome of Air Services Australia. Air traffic for both Brisbane BNE and Gold Coast OOL airports and other communications are monitored and managed from this tower. Access to the immediate area is restricted.

On a Green Field Far Away

Patchy cloud around Mt Somerville allows a shaft of light to a paddock just beneath the Air Services of Australia geodesic communications dome. The dome services all domestic and other air traffic for Brisbane BNE and Gold Coast OOL airports. Foreground of the image is the Currumbin Creek Valley.

Milky Way over Mt Somerville HDR version

I recently published on Flickr an earlier Lightroom edit of this image. It was one original from a series of RAW (NEF) images from the same shoot. This image is a merger of three sequential HDR images from that shoot. The comparison of the images is striking.

Milky Way over Mt Somerville

It is a hazy night over the border foothills but the Milky Way finds a way to shine. The bright patch highlighting the geodesic dome on Mt Somerville is reflected light from Murwillumbah a town a few kilometres almost directly behind. It's about 1.45am so only a few residential lights are active on the hillside.

Silhouette and Ceiling

Bushfire smoke colours the sunset over the border ranges. The radar and communications geodesic dome and bush on Mt Somerville are in silhouette against the florid sky.

Flight of Clouds

Long Exposure over Mt Somerville as the on-shore wind clears the sky over the southern fringe of the Queensland Gold Coast.

Cloud Flows on the Border

Long exposure over Mts Somerville (radar dome) and Tomewin on the Queensland — New South Wales border. A mild rain front is approaching with some streamers lurching ahead in a generally northward movement parallel with the Gold Coast..

Stratus Sunset on the Gold Coast

Looking south over Mt Somerville (with the radar dome) and Mt Tomewin to the west. I suspect the colours are enhanced by traces of bushfire smoke from New South Wales and Queensland. Winds have come from both north and south over the last week or so.

Brown Rain's Gonna Fall

It's bushfire season in Australia. This smoke on the Gold Coast has come in from the north west of Queensland. Ribbons of it plummet earthwards dragged down by thunderstorms which are also a feature of the Gold Coast spring and early summer.

Afternoon Shadows and Modernity

Setting sun casts its shadows on the eastern slopes of foothills over the Queensland – New South Wales border. Hazard reduction fires give a faint bronze tinge to the sky and valley.

Night Glow

Mt Somerville and Mt Tomewin silhouette after the sunset storm passes. Night lights of hillside homes glow against the shadows.

Sunset Strata

Curious layers and colours above northern New South Wales. Mt Somerville (with radar dome) and Mt Tomewin shape the horizon while golden light picks out the residential windows on the hillside of Currumbin Valley. The logic of the colours defies me.

Under the Storm by armct

Under the Storm

With more to come. Waves of fronts come from the southwest on their way to the Gold Coast and Pacific. The east of Australia was hit by severe storms north and south of the Queensland Gold Coast. There was 50mm of rain at my home on the hinterland where most of it was heavy but generally patchy. Most of Good Friday was spent watching serious storms pass by, occasionally overhead like this one with high cloud to cloud lightning.

Storm Front Arrives

Fine summer day on the southern Gold Coast interrupted as front from the south west pushes in with heavy rain.

Turmoil at Storm Front

Massive thunderstorm at right squeezes its way towards the camera as older thunderheads collapse and disintegrate at left. At left is the Gold Coast, Springbrook Plateau is to the extreme right. It's about 1230pm.

Fronts Roll, Sun Sets and Lights Illuminate

Reflected sunset on the Queensland border sheds light under the base of a rain front. Residential lighting punctuates the evening gloom falling on the ranges and the slopes of Currumbin Valley.

Mt Somerville Sunset

Throughout the foothills of the plateaus along the Queensland Gold Coast hinterlands people live in houses tucked away in bush and farmland. They light up every evening, a pretty site itself, but sometimes augmented the colour of the setting sun. This image features Mt Somerville and its Air Services Australia communications dome which controls air traffic in the air space for both Gold Coast and Brisbane Airports.

Chaotic Cloud

On the south end of the Queensland Gold Coast winds coming from the south west (right of image) often collide with easterly on-shore winds (left). There are visible effects at different altitudes. Cloud movements can provide traces of what is happening. However, attempts to interpret the whole picture can sometimes be mesmerising.

Storm Sunset

Rolling fronts due to nation-wide La Nina and Indian Ocean Dipole interactions. This means that spring on the Gold Coast is wet, windy and prone to thunderstorms. There is no respite as the sun goes down.
