Alco goodness

Someone must have stumbled across some unused tins of green paint in the shed....and 831 got a nice new set of number boards.

The daily stone train from the Barossa Valley to the soda ash plant at Port Adelaide nears the end of its journey behind Genesee & Wyoming Australia Alcos 831/841 - 29 September 2008,

Surprisingly these locomotives had been recently repainted in a slightly modified version of the corporate colours of their previous owner Australian National - a decade after the sale of the business!

Hamley Bridge shunt

Found this one in the bottom of the sock drawer - Australian National broad gauge Alcos 838/852/844 shunt the silo road at Hamley Bridge on Tuesday 1 February 1994 while working a Saddleworth to Port Adelaide grain train. This was the only time I managed a shot of a train shunting here.

No trains here anymore, and the silos have also recently been demolished.

Wasted journey

Australian National's broad gauge Alcos 845/839 seen stabled at Apamurra, South Australia, on Tuesday 10 December 1991.

Would have knocked off work early to drive out to Apamurra for, if my memory serves me correctly, a 1700hrs departure to Monarto South. On this occasion got out there only to find the train had been cancelled, though my notes don't mention why?

Semaphores last stand

Australian National broad gauge ALCos 965/832 wait to depart Roseworthy, South Australia, with their loaded Tarlee to Port Adelaide grain train on Sunday 15 December 1991.

The semaphore signals in the background were a removed by work gangs two days later when they became redundant when the train order working boundary was moved south to Gawler.

Lameroo silos

Australian National broad gauge Alcos 844/705 pass the impressive grain silos at Lameroo, South Australia with eastbound freight 5AM7 on 20 April 1995.

For two weeks in April 1995, a daily return pair of Adelaide to Melbourne freights were diverted over the lightly trafficked Tailem Bend - Pinnaroo - Ouyen broad gauge route. This was to allow the main Adelaide to Melbourne railway line to be gauge converted from broad gauge (5'3") to standard gauge.

Hampden in the fading light

Last shot of the day on 12 February 1990 as Australian National, DL531 model Alcps 844/835 climb upgrade through the locality of Hampden on the broad gauge line from Eudunda. The train had originated at Robertstown with grain destined for Port Adelaide.

Despite a general lack of habitation, and Eudunda only being 11km away, Hampden had a small station and was served by a passenger railcar service until 1968. The station and associated infrastructure disappeared in the late 70s/early 80s.

Early morning Gawler Belt

On 13 March 1995, Australian National locos 844/CK4/961 approach Redbanks Rd, Gawler Belt, South Australia, with 52 empty broad gauge wagons destined for storage on the closed line between Kapunda and Eudunda.

February to April 1995 saw five such moves and a total of 202 wagons stored on the branch. This was as a result of the progressive take-up of interstate services by National Rail and the impending standardisation of the Melbourne to Adelaide line.

Turbo lag

Australia National broad gauge Alcos 859/963 get their train of Balaklava-bound V/Line hoppers away from Roseworthy, South Australia, on 23 March 1995.

Both locos survive, though are unlikely to work again. 963 is with Steamranger, but hasn't moved for 28 years, while 859 survives with Aurizon at Thevenard, but is not currently in use.

Australian National's Alco DL531, 847 at Birkenhead, South Australia during April 1989 with the daily empty fuel tanks from Port Pirie. It will shortly come to a halt and reverse its consist back into the Mobile fuel terminal, the tanks of which can be seen in the background.

Alco 847 was built under licence by A E Goodwin (Sydney) in 1969 for the South Australian Railways.

Wagon hop

Broad gauge Alcos 838/833, with 504 dead attached, head a rake of empty OB wagons, ex storage at Wallaroo, between Bute and Barunga Gap, South Australia, on 3 November 1987.

Angaston cement

Broad gauge Australian National Alco 836 shunts the cement works siding at Angaston in the Barossa Valley on 19 September 1990.

The loco had worked a short ballast train to the Valley earlier in the day and would return to Adelaide that afternoon with the empty ballast and loaded cement hoppers in tow. Unfortunately the rail line to the cement works is now a bike path.

Bucolic Bute

Broad gauge Alcos 838/833, with 504 dead attached, head a rake of empty OB wagons, ex storage at Wallaroo, trundling through the deserted yard in Bute, South Australia on 3 November 1987.

The fleet of open OB wagons had been stored at Wallaroo and were being cleaned and returned to traffic for use during the upcoming harvest. As it turned out, ultimately they only saw limited use on South Australian grain trains during 1988, as the grain fleet transitioned to 100% covered hoppers.

851 at Port Lincoln

Australian National (AN) 3'6" gauge Alco, 851 seen arriving at Port Lincoln with a loaded grain shuttle from Wanilla on Monday, 20 January 1986. Loading was often dropped at Wanilla by inbound trains that were too heavy to get over the grade of Pearlah Bank.

851 was built in 1962 under licence by AE Goodwin for the South Australian Railways (SAR) and has spent its entire working career on the isolated Eyre Peninsula network. In this shot it still retains its SAR 'mustard pot' livery and no AN branding despite the transition eight years earlier.
