A friendly Ukrainian in Europe by Jean-Marc Frybourg

A friendly Ukrainian in Europe

This is in Europe, and this is a Ukrainian locomotive: nope, there’s no Ukrainian invasion, Ukrainians are not like Russians. This is just friendly business at Dornești, where Ukrainian trains can enter Romania thanks to the dual-gauge track coming from Tchernivtsi, which is on the right.

The diesel locomotive is a 2x3000 HP double engine of the 2TE10M series. 3513 units were built in Luhansk, Ukraine, between 1961 and 1996.

Border Patrol

In Dornești, at 11 km / 7 miles from the Ukraine – Romania border, Ukrainian and Romanian engines are close friends in the local locomotive depot. The dual-gauge line coming from Tchernivtsi is one of the vital export links for Ukraine while it is suffering from Russian aggression.

On the left, the Romanian freight operator “Grup Ferroviar Roman” rests and serves its engines on standard gauge tracks. In the middle, a broad-gauge track is the resting place for the Ukrainian diesels, and on the right, the mainline is dual gauged. The line only sees freight traffic.

NR Diamonds in Melbourne (2002)

The blinds are down for the low afternoon sun as National Rail's NR90-95 begin to accelerate MA5 past Middle Footscray railway station on November 22, 2002. In the background is the ever-changing Melbourne skyline. The well wagons visible behind the loco will most likely become double-stacked in Adelaide for the run to Perth.

Old EMDs, New GE (2002)

National Rail's NR83-8115 depart Melbourne with the steel train and are about to enter Bunbury Street tunnel as GNR GM10-GM22 exits with a string of containers on November 22, 2002. The rake of distinctive yellow containers on the stele can be seen curving round to the left of frame. The Maribyrnong River and Melbourne skyline are in the background. GNR has long gone, but GM10 & 22 remain active in the service of SSR.

Chiggen

Santa Cruz Portland Cement 2.

Looking at the Porter Catalog one can imagine the Santa Cruz Portland Cement company placing a telegraph order with the code-name "Klinge" for a Class B-S locomotive. An 0-4-0 with a smart saddle tank, 15" cylinders and a 24" stroke, and 18,000 lbf of tractive effort. The locomotive was completed in 1909.

Chiggen only somehow manages to be a slightly less silly name than Class B-S "Klinge" was anyways.

Edit: I changed some of the caption when Stathi Pappas, the owner of the locomotive commented on my Facebook post that the Chiggen was built to upgraded specs from 1909 compared to the 1908 catalog I had found, that included a higher boiler pressure and over-bored cylinders.

Mindarie sands empties

In September 2008, Genesee & Wyoming Australia's EMD units CLP8 and 2210 are seen near Birkenhead, South Australia with empty containers for loading at the Mindarie mineral sands plant in the Murray Mallee.

The track here is dual gauge trackage (broad and standard), this train being standard gauge.

Dual-gauge and the truck

A truck crosses the level crossing at the west end of the Ingeniero Jacobacci station (Rio Negro Province, Argentina).

Its front wheels are right above the broad-gauge track belonging to the Viedma-Bariloche line. The other tracks belong to the narrow gauge “La Trochita” line Ing. Jacobacci to Esquel. Both lines are operated by the "Tren Patagonico". The Trochita is now a tourist operation, and the taffic is mostly made of (steam-hauled) charter trains.

The broad gauge is 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) wide, and the narrow gauge is 750 mm (2 ft 5+1⁄2 in) wide, less than half the size of the broad gauge!

Rio Grande Southern 20

The 1899 built engine feels like it rests between two worlds when it runs on the outskirts of the Colorado Railroad Museum. On one hand, escapism to the steam powered past. On the opposite side of the property line a mix of industry and suburbia in the modern city of Golden, Colorado.

Heading for the Gap

On 9 April 1992, Australian National's 600 class Alocs 607/602 climb the grade to Barunga Gap along the dual gauge track between Snowtown and Wallaroo with empty ballast hoppers for loading.

The line had already been closed to regular traffic, but ballast trains ran for a couple of years on the standard gauge to a small quarry near Bute.
