Bone Valley Relics

CSXT 533 leads the New Wales turn job past one of the last US&S Y pattern signals in Florida. The Bone Valley was one of the last holdouts for classic SAL and ACL-era signals in Florida, but CSX finally replaced them last year. This is the Bone Valley subdivision to Agricola in southern Polk County, which was previously operated by the ACL and once connected to the railroad's Lakeland-Fort Myers line at Fort Meade.

Handy Extras by Leo Blackwelder

Handy Extras

I took a little wander through some parts of Ohio recently, mostly with the aim of finding some interesting RoadRailer equipment survivors and getting good photo reference of them, but with the added bonus of visiting some familiar vintage signal equipment. It's been a few years since I've made it anywhere on the CSX Toledo Sub, and I've been meaning to come back for a quick visit for a while now. Finally managed to line things up just right this time. Signal shots weren't my main goal, but I was happy to add a few more to my collection for sure.

I finished up getting my photo reference of some very vintage RoadRailer trailers up by Napoleon, then headed down to Deshler - it's the classic go-to, of course I'm gonna make a stop there. I spotted a train hanging out in the siding and decided to wait and see what it was up to, only to find it wasn't even crewed. Eventually, though, another southbound started got to come through as the sun was going down. Well-timed, certainly. Equally well timed was the parked train getting a crew finally, so we'd get two departures here at South Deshler.

The old B&O signals do have a certain draw to them. They aren't my favourite style - those awards going to Pennsy PLs and Seachlights - but they are still very cool all the same. They are certainly weird as hell though. Crazy way to display indications for sure... but at least they look cool. I definitely need to make another visit before too long.

Christmas Night at Santa Fe Junction

A southbound BNSF grain train passes the iconic searchlight style signals located at Santa Fe Junction on a cloudy Christmas night. These US&S signals through some miracle have survived the recent purging of what used to be the most common form of railroad signals in the United States, being some of the last active examples of searchlight signals in the Kansas City area as of 2024.

TAG Splitting the Searchlights

Norfolk Southern 4851, a recently rebuilt General Electric AC44C6M, leads westbound NS manifest W3K between the iconic searchlight style signals at Santa Fe Junction on a cloudy March afternoon. NS 4851, formerly NS C44-9W 9583, received a striking livery honoring the Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia Railroad at their Juniata Shops. The TAG was a small class 1 railroad that operated in its namesake states between 1911 and 1971 before joining the Southern system.
