Just a few cm in height, with flowers (red, orange or blue) less than 10mm diameter, scarlet pimpernel is a delicate and pretty little annual member of the primrose family, Primulaceae.
Flowers open only when the sun shines and close in overcast conditions giving rise to a collection of common names including 'poor man's barometer' and 'John go to bed at noon'.
Native range of Anagallis arvensis is Europe, Western Asia and North Africa.

You may know the flowers name as the title of a novel by Baroness Orczy, but is has also inspired J. R. R. Tolkien, who wrote in a letter that it was the inspiration for Elanor, the golden, star-shaped flower that appears in TLotR and elsewhere in his writing.
