Face jugs are a unique form of folk art that often feature exaggerated facial features and whimsical designs. These jugs have deep roots in African-American history, particularly among enslaved potters in the 19th-century South. They were created as expressions of personal or communal identity, and their distinctive, often grotesque appearance can carry powerful symbolic meanings.
What may seem hideous to one person can be seen as a fascinating expression of creativity, tradition, and cultural heritage to another. Museums like the Smithsonian recognize the importance of preserving and showcasing diverse forms of art, even those that challenge conventional notions of beauty.
SCOUT: "Oh look Paddy! A lovely pond! Isn't the water a pretty blue?"
PADDY: "Oh yes it is, Scout!"
SCOUT: "Do you think Daddy would mind taking a picture of us in front of the pretty pond, Paddy?"
PADDY: "I'm sure he would, Scout. Daddy likes taking photographs of us anywhere." *Giggles.*
SCOUT: "That's true, Paddy." *Giggles too.*
DADDY: "What are you two giggling about?"
PADDY: "Oh, nothing Daddy."
SCOUT: "But Daddy? Daddy!"
DADDY: "Yes, Scout?"
SCOUT: *Shyly.* "Well, I was wondering whether you would mind taking a photo of Paddy and me in front of this pretty pond." *Hopeful.*
DADDY: "Oh, I'd love to, Scout. Alright, stand together now, Paddy and Scout."
PADDY and SCOUT: "Yes Daddy!"
DADDY: "Now when I count to three, say 'grumbly tummies', alright?"
PADDY and SCOUT: "Yes Daddy!"
DADDY: "Alright! One.. two..." *Face pales and mouth falls open.*
PADDY: "Daddy, are you alright? You've gone pale all of a sudden!" *Concerned.*
SCOUT: "Daddy! Daddy! You forgot to say 'three'. Three comes after two you know!" *Disgruntled.*
DADDY: "Umm... I... I don't want to alarm you, Paddy and Scout... but..."
PADDY and SCOUT: "But Daddy?"
DADDY: "But there is a big shark behind you with sharp teeth!"
PADDY: "A big shark?"
SCOUT: "With sharp teeth?"
DADDY: "Yes!" *Scared.*
PADDY and SCOUT: *Turn and see big shark with sharp teeth.*
DADDY: "Eeeekkkk! Run Paddy and Scout!"
PADDY and SCOUT: "Eeeekkkk!"
DADDY, PADDY and SCOUT: *Run away to safety.*
SHARK: "Where did everybear go? I was just going to smile for the photograph! Humph!" *Grumbles and sinks back down into his pond.*
It's alright! No bears were harmed in the taking of this photo!
It was a fine, but cold, day a few weeks ago, so I decided to take advantage of the nicer weather and take some of my bear clan to a wonderful miniature golf range, which has popped up along the Yarra River in Docklands. The little course, installed beneath a life size Ferris wheel along the corniche, features a range of animals (including the mechanical shark above), a Melbourne skyline and even a working bear size Ferris wheel! It was too wonderful an opportunity to refuse, and I’m so pleased to have given them all the opportunity to have some fun and play. I think the young builders on a nearby site were both amused and perplexed as they watched the bears and I playing together. Perhaps they have never seen such well behaved and tenacious bears before.
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Went back to visit the Pika, Marmots, and White-tailed Ptarmigan. Found all three. The Pika were collecting plants for their winter caches. The Marmots were loud and fat. The Ptarmigan were, unfortunately, not in their winter plumage, which is a bummer (still, a cool bird).
On one of our days travelling out to the far north-western part of the South Island we travelled to Bainham and Collingwood. We stumbled on a giant pumpkin competition weigh-in with the resulting Pumpkins being adorned at the Courtyard Cafe. Just perfect for today's Smile on Saturday theme of Smile and show your teeth! The one on the left was obviously crowing nastily over beating the one on the right! But the winner had gone elsewhere! See my next photo for one of the competition participants from Bainham, also sporting smiles. HSoS:)

When it comes to achieving the perfect smile, finding the best cosmetic dentists near you in San Diego is essential.
Whether you're looking for veneers, dental implants, smile makeovers, full mouth reconstruction, or dentures, choosing the right dentist can make all the difference.
To help you avoid common mistakes, we've compiled a list of the top 7 errors people often make when searching for cosmetic dentists in San Diego County.
Mistake 1: Not Researching the Dentist's Credentials
One of the biggest mistakes individuals make is not taking the time to research the credentials of cosmetic dentists near San Diego. It's crucial to find dentists who have undergone advanced training in cosmetic dentistry and are members of reputable dental organizations. This ensures that they possess the necessary expertise and knowledge to provide high-quality cosmetic dental treatments.
To avoid this mistake, make sure to thoroughly research and verify the dentist's credentials. Look for information on their website, check for any awards or recognition they may have received, and read patient reviews to gauge their reputation.
Mistake 2: Overlooking Experience and Specializations
Another common mistake is overlooking the experience and specializations of cosmetic dentists. Cosmetic dentistry is a specialized field, and it's vital to find a dentist who has extensive experience in the specific treatments you desire, such as veneers, dental implants, smile makeovers, full mouth reconstruction, or dentures.
To avoid this mistake, inquire about the dentist's experience and ask if they have performed similar procedures in the past. Additionally, ask about any specialized training or certifications they have obtained in cosmetic dentistry.
Mistake 3: Not Considering the Range of Cosmetic Dentistry Options
Many individuals mistakenly assume that cosmetic dentistry only includes teeth whitening or veneers. However, there is a wide range of cosmetic dentistry options available, including dental implants, orthodontics, and gum reshaping.
It's important to choose a dentist in San Diego who offers a comprehensive array of cosmetic dental treatments to address your specific needs.
To avoid this mistake, take the time to research the different cosmetic dentistry options available and determine which ones are most suitable for achieving your desired outcome. Then, choose a dentist who offers those specific treatments.
Mistake 4: Ignoring the Importance of a Personal Connection
Building a personal connection with your cosmetic dentist is crucial for a successful treatment journey. Many people overlook the significance of feeling comfortable and confident with their dentist, which can greatly impact the overall experience and outcome of cosmetic dental procedures.
To avoid this mistake, schedule a consultation with the dentist before committing to any treatment. During the consultation, ask questions, discuss your concerns, and assess whether you feel comfortable and at ease with the dentist and their staff.
Mistake 5: Choosing Based Solely on Price
While affordability is an important factor to consider, solely choosing a cosmetic dentist based on price can lead to subpar results.
Quality cosmetic dentistry requires expertise, specialized equipment, and high-quality materials, which may come at a higher cost. Opting for the cheapest option may compromise the outcome and your satisfaction.
To avoid this mistake, instead of solely focusing on price, consider the overall value and quality of the cosmetic dental treatments. Look for dentists who offer flexible payment options or financing
