The Orange-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia xanthogaster), photographed at La Minga Ecolodge near Cali, Colombia, is a stunning example of the vibrant biodiversity found in the Andean cloud forests. This colorful bird stands out with its radiant orange belly, deep blue-violet back, and a golden-yellow crown, perched delicately on a slender branch. The softly blurred green background adds depth and contrast, enhancing the bird’s striking colors while maintaining a natural harmony with its surroundings.
To capture this image, I used the Canon R5 paired with the RF 100-500mm lens at its full 500mm focal length. The settings included a shutter speed of 1/500 second to freeze the subtle movements of the bird and ISO 800 to balance the dim, diffused forest light while preserving the vibrant tones and details. Photographing this euphonia required patience and a careful eye to time the moment just right. This image reflects not only the technical precision behind the shot but also the serene beauty and fragility of the habitat it represents.

In the lush cloud forests of La Florida El Bosque de las Aves, the Orange-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia xanthogaster) presented itself, a subject as challenging as it was alluring. The contrasts and textures of its habitat provided a rich tapestry against which the deep blues and vibrant yellows of its plumage could sing. Capturing this image was a lesson in patience and the subtle art of lighting; the understory's diffused light offered a natural softbox, but capturing the bird's true colors against the variegated greens required careful exposure adjustments and a keen eye for detail.
From a technical standpoint, the shot demanded a fast shutter speed to freeze the Euphonia's sudden movements, a wide aperture to ensure a smooth background, and a low ISO to maintain the image's clarity. This photograph stands as a reminder of the photographer's dual role as both artist and documentarian—a curator of nature's fleeting moments, and a conservator of the stories that unfold in the wild. It’s these stories, told through the dance of shadow and color, that continue to drive my passion for avian photography and conservation.

Teaming with life this thing. I only planted it a year ago and its over 6 feet tall and providing me with loads of entertainment. Plus the flowers are the sweetest smelling I have ever um yeah you get it. I have to admit the sniff test on my new 90mm was pretty good too.

Stomorhina xanthogaster
Family: Rhiniidae
Order: Diptera
They are nectar feeders and are useful pollinators.
This individual was seen on the south coast of NSW, Australia at the southern end of the range for this species. The range extends to North Queensland.
I have seen Stomorhina flies on flowers of Scaevola, Parsonsia stramenea, Westringea fruticosa.
