Air Canada remains a long time stalwart at London Heathrow, the flag-carrier providing endless variety with its long-haul network which has seen continuous change over the last decade.
Unique amongst Air Canada's fleet is their small fleet of 6 Boeing 777-200LRs used on their longest range flights as well as supplementing their larger Boeing 777-300ER fleet; the type allowed Air Canada to replace the 2 Airbus A340-500s which only lasted with the carrier for 3 years from 2004 up until 2007.
This fleet has often been the subject of rumours, whether they were expected to be withdrawn from service; they received a major interior refurbishment alongside the elder Boeing 777-300ERs that dated from 2007 to 2009 throughout 2018, the cabins matching the new designs first featured on their high-density Boeing 777-300ERs dating from 2013 which became standard across new long-haul aircraft being delivered.
During COVID-19, Air Canada's Boeing 777-200LRs were all placed into storage with an uncertain future being somewhat non-standard; speculation about their supposed demise was heightened as other Boeing 777-200LRs with different carriers began to fall out of favour, Delta Air Lines and Etihad having withdrawn theirs. Nevertheless, they were reinstated by late-2021 with all returning by early-2022, their role becoming especially more important as their range became useful following the closure of Russian airspace to western countries following their illegal invasion of Ukraine.
Even today, the Boeing 777-200LRs continue their role as Air Canada's ultra long-range hauler, sometimes being deputised by Boeing 777-300ERs and even Boeing 787-9s. They can also be found operating shorter range flights, and remain an irregular visitor at London Heathrow.
Currently, Air Canada operates 25 Boeing 777s, which includes 6 Boeing 777-200LRs and 19 Boeing 777-300ERs.
