Cheddar Gorge, Somerset. Three miles long with spectacularly precipitous cliffs towering 400 feet on either side, Cheddar Gorge is the largest in Britain. This natural landmark was formed during the last Ice Age, when glacial meltwater formed a river that, over millenia, carved its way through Carboniferous Limestone to produce the deep canyon seen today. These are the cliffs on the south side of the road

Outcrop resulting from limestone quarrying activities carried out by John Wainwright & Co from 1902 to 1910. Operations were shut down under pressure of public opposition, concerned about the impact of mining operations on the landmark Cheddar Gorge.
