Helvella crispa, also known as the white saddle, elfin saddle or common helvel, is an ascomycete fungus of the family Helvellaceae. The mushroom is readily identified by its irregularly shaped whitish cap, fluted stem, and fuzzy undersurfaces. It is found in eastern North America and in Europe, near deciduous trees in summer and autumn.

Die Herbstlorcheln waren Mitte Oktober sehr häufig an Wegrändern zu finden. In der Zwischenzeit sieht man nur noch wenige von Ihnen. Wie jedes Jahr habe ich wieder etliche fotografiert. Man findet keine zwei genau gleiche.

Although some guidebooks list this species as edible, the genus is now regarded with suspicion by many. Research has established this species contains monomethylhydrazine, which can cause severe sporadic intoxications, and may be carcinogenic. It has been reported to cause gastrointestinal symptoms when eaten raw.
In Flemish and Dutch we call these "Witte kluifzwam", which means white bone fungus. Often fleshy and quite abundant species, but not safe for consumption as they contain a volatile toxic substance you need to boil out (Helvella crispa, Helvellaceae, Ascomycota). Found in Terhagen (Belgium 14 November 2018).
