The Postcard
A postcard that was published by the Lansdowne Production Co. The card was printed in England.
The card was posted in Brighton using a 2d. stamp on Thursday the 21st. July 1949. It was sent to:
Mr. & Mrs. W. Davis,
Collingwood Private Hotel,
1, Grantley Road,
Boscombe,
Bournemouth.
The pencilled message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"Dear Mum & Dad,
Shanklin looks a nice
place. There are boats
to there from here but
it takes all day to get
there and back, it's a
long way.
We saw Bob Hope in
'Sorrowful Jones' - it's
good.
I'm getting a bit sunburnt,
but the sun does not stay
out long enough (it must
have heard what I said).
Turned out nice again.
This place seems to suit
me, I am OK.
We had perishing kippers
for breakfast, it took me
three quarters of an hour.
Expect me home at 4 am
on Sunday.
I won't write to you again.
Love Sybil & Cyril."
Sorrowful Jones
Sorrowful Jones, starring Bob Hope and Lucille Ball was released in June 1949. Shot in black and white and running for 1 hour and 28 minutes, it was the first of four feature films that Bob Hope and Lucille Ball made together.
In the film a young girl is left with the notoriously cheap Humphrey 'Sorrowful' Jones (played by Bob Hope) as a marker for a bet.
When her father doesn't return, Humphrey learns that taking care of a child interferes with his free-wheeling lifestyle. Sorrowful must also evade crooked gangsters and indulge in a bit of horse-thieving.
The consensus seems to be that it was a good, but not a great film.
The North Atlantic Treaty
So what else happened on the day that Sybil and Cyril posted the card?
Well, on the 21st. July 1949, the US Senate ratified the North Atlantic Treaty by a vote of 82 to 13.
>u> Karl-Hermann Geib
The day also marked the death at the young age of 41 of the German physical chemist Karl-Hermann Geib.
