SR 109 Hoquiam to Ocean City – Remove Fish Barriers by WSDOT

SR 109 Hoquiam to Ocean City – Remove Fish Barriers

Improving salmon habitat is far from easy. Crews on this section of SR 109 removed the entire roadway. They dug up the original culvert. The original culvert didn’t work for fish passage. This project was located near Iron Springs. Travelers were detoured around the work zone during construction.

After crews remove and replace the culvert, the focus turns to rebuilding the creek. The creek is remade to benefit fish at all life cycles. A lot of attention goes into how the creek twists and turns. The creek gets tree roots and other logs. The addition has many physical and biological benefits for the stream. The wood helps provides a temporary place of refuge for fish. The wood also can help stabilize the streambank and slow water flows during flooding.

SR 109 Hoquiam to Ocean City – Remove Fish Barriers

Crews removed barriers to fish at this location between Seabrook and Iron Springs. The work on SR 109 occurred during a total closure of SR 109 during the summer of 2024. Removing barriers to fish under state highways is far from easy. During this important work, crews dig up the entire highway. Workers install a large concrete structure that allows fish to swim under the highway. Once crews install the new structure, workers repave and reopen the highway. The much larger concrete culvert or bridge replaces the small pipe culvert that blocked fish migration. wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/search-projects/sr-109...

SR 109 Hoquiam to Ocean City – Remove Fish Barriers

Crews removed barriers to fish on five locations on State Route 109. The work happened between Seabrook and Hoquiam. Workers at this location west of Hoquiam have removed the old culvert. The new structure removes barriers to fish. The stream is no longer restricted to a tight culvert. Snags and logs help benefit fish at all life cycles. wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/search-projects/sr-109...
