Åsgårdstrand has been a popular holiday and bathing resort since the 1920s. At that time, it was mostly people from Oslo who went south and down to the Vestfold coast (or "out in the country" as it was called at the time). Over the years, Åsgårdstrand has maintained its popularity as a holiday resort - not least among boaters. Every summer there is a bustling life of small boats out on the fjord and in the harbour. When you come to Åsgårdstrand on a summer day, you will quickly discover that the town has more to offer than sun, sea and bathing.
It was in Åsgårdstrand that Munch had a summer home and painted several of his most significant and famous works, pictures that are today bestsellers: The Girls on the Bridge from 1901, Four Girls in Åsgårdstrand from 1903, The Dance of Life from 1899-1900.
