A Little Yoga

A male long-tailed duck (Clangula hyemalis) in its winter plumage.

It is not often I get these beautiful birds this close, but I was lucky while lying on a jetty last spring. It stayed at a short distance for a long time- resting, yawning and stretching.

I also got a female fishing even closer that day, even too close to take photos ツ

Speckled Mousebird Family by Ranveig Marie Photography

Speckled Mousebird Family

One of the parents in a family of speckled mousebirds (Colius striatus) that I met in Kenya.

They were feedig their young ones, and you can spot another bird behind the branch on top.

I met this charming bird species a couple of times on both trips to Masai Mara, last year and the year before.

Always Lucky by Ranveig Marie Photography

Always Lucky

That was what my friend said about me to the others, when I arrived to see this rare steppe grey shrike (Lanius excubitor pallidirostris) on Jæren yesterday.

They had been there for a long time several times, only seeing it from a distance on the other side of a field. But as you can see, 5 minutes after she said that, it disappeared from the other side of the field, and when I looked up, it sat on a lamp post right above us. After some photos, it came down on the ground, only 2-3 meters away from our feet (!) Then it took a large beetle and ate it on the stone wall about 4 meters away. We had it hunting for beetles and wasps and resting as well, up close for a very long time. We almost couldn't believe what happened!

It is a subspecies of the great grey shrike, and a very rare visitor in Norway. It is native to Central Asia and parts of northern China, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

We have the "regular" great grey shrikes here, but I had only seen the red-backed shrikes here before, so it was a new species to me anyway - my number 234 in Norway.

The Speckled Mousebird

One of the cute speckled mousebirds (Colius striatus) we met in Kenya on our last day.

It is the largest species of mousebird, as well as one of the most common.

Mousebirds are said to get their name from their soft fluffy feathers that are more like fur, a long thin tail that is twice the length of their body, and they have mouse-like habits; scurrying around in search of food.
