Cathedral Rock, Carnarvon National Park - Mt Moffatt Section.

This part of this wonderful national park, is a display of the remnant sculptures of the beds of Hutton Sandstone.
Here the moisture within the sandstone weeps or rises to the surface to be evaporated and in so doing brings dissolved minerals to the surface which then become indurations toughening the surface. The rising moisture also sustains lichen that cover the surface protecting it from weathering. The result is this grey wavey surface.
However where the surface is broken, and along the bedding planes and joint lines, the weathering is relatively rapid, and the colour of the sandstone is revealed.

Banks Rock

Banks Rock is well off a gravel road through the Great Western Woodlands. We did not reach it with our camper along the unsigned bush tracks but found another rock nearby to camp. There were no other visitors around which added to the feeling of remoteness. A huge proportion of the South West of Western Australia is underlain by granite, the Yilgarn Craton. The cratons of Western Australia contain rocks more than 2.5 billion years old. These cratons have floated across the Earth’s surface over billions of years before arriving at their present arrangement as part of Western Australia. The Yilgarn Craton was once blanketed by thick sheets of ice from about 320–280 million years ago. These glaciers ground down and flattened out the topography in large areas of the Yilgarn Craton. Since that time it has never been completely covered by the sea and has seen no glaciers or mountain building activity. Over millions of years, a stable climate has allowed species to evolve without the major extinctions seen elsewhere in the world. Granite outcrops and domes – where the Yilgarn Block is exposed above the surface – are typical features of the flat and sandy landscape of South West Australia. Around the base of outcrops, soils are often deeper and benefit from seepage of water from the impermeable rocks, so distinctive fringing vegetation zones develop, biodiversity hotspots within the Southwest Australia biodiversity hotspot. Kleine Spitzkoppe

The early morning sun creeps across the Namib desert and hits the red granite rocks on Kleine Spitzkoppe to the west. The shadow on the left is from Gross Spitzkoppe, where Mal and I are with our cameras. (That's Mal bottom right.)

"Klein Spitzkoppe is a granite inselberg ("island mountain") located in southern Damaraland, Namibia, 110 kilometers northeast of the coastal harbor town of Swakopmund. The mountain peak is 1,580 meters above sea level. Approximately 12 km eastnortheast of Klein ("small") Spitzkoppe is another granite inselberg, Gross ("large") Spitzkoppe, which has an elevation of 1750 meters above sea level. Both of these mountains form impressive topographic landmarks that can be seen from many kilometers away, rising high above the surrounding Namib Desert calcrete plains.
