The Purple Sandpiper by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Purple Sandpiper

A purple sandpiper (Calidris maritima) in its breeding plumage, on Svalbard almost two years ago.

This one was ringed and called X6A, on the same place two summers earlier. It was registered only there three summers in a row, and have not been registered later on.

I actually like them better in their grey winter plumage, like we see them when they visit our part of the country.

Yesterday I saw one for the first time on our island, sitting on a skerry as we were out in our boat. It let us get close to photograph it. I look forward to show that one as well one day.

They breed from the arctic islands of northern Canada, eastwards to Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard and northern Scandinavia across to Western Siberia and the Taymyr Peninsula. In the high arctic they breed at low altitude on the tundra, sometimes far from the coastline, but in the subarctic regions of Sweden and Norway it breeds on barren mountain sides near the limit of the frozen ground.

Birds breeding at high latitudes migrate south and spend the winter on rocky shores on both sides of the north Atlantic.

The Arctic Tern by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Arctic Tern

An Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) on Svalbard. They nested right by the road.

The Arctic tern has a circumpolar breeding distribution covering the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Europe (as far south as Brittany in France), Asia, and North America (as far south as Massachusetts).

It is well known for its long-distance migration, traveling each year from one end of the world to the other and back.

Arctic terns are long-lived birds, with many reaching fifteen to thirty years of age.

Red-Throated Divers by Ranveig Marie Photography

Red-Throated Divers

A red-throated diver/loon (Gavia stellata), from my Svalbard archive.

Several couples nested there, and these had their nest on an islet in a lagoon right by the road, as you can see on this photo.

Suddenly a third of their species came, and they started doing the special gestures (and sounds).

They breed primarily in Arctic regions, and winter in northern coastal waters. They have a large global population and a significant global range, though some populations are declining.

It is the smallest loon species, with a slender neck and bill. It often holds the thin bill at an upward angle.

ICEland

The morning after a blizzard, the landscape around Grundarfjörður is quite monochrome, but beautifully covered in snow. From a bird's eye view, it is also easy to see that Kirkjufell is not only impressive because of its shape, but also because of its location in the middle of the fjord.

The King Eider by Ranveig Marie Photography

The King Eider

Today it is one year since I saw the beautiful king eiders for the first time (Somateria spectabilis) - two males and one female, on Svalbard.

The species has a circumpolar distribution that is more northerly than the other eider species. It breeds in high arctic regions of Russia, North America, and on Greenland and Svalbard.

The Glaucous Gull by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Glaucous Gull

Exactly one year ago, I went to Svalbard in the Arctic for the first time.

This is one of two glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus), that I photographed on that first evening.

I had seen the species a couple of times in our part of Norway as well, but it was nice to see them in larger amounts where they belong and breed.

It is the second-largest gull in the world, after the great black-backed gull (svartbak in Norwegian).

Both of the glaucous gulls were looking for eider chicks to grab. Of course they need food as well, but I was glad I didn't have to see them take one..

Svalbard Beauties by Ranveig Marie Photography

Svalbard Beauties

On Svalbard, hundreds of barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) nested or had goslings right by the road (in addition to the eiders and terns). I really like their appearance, and it was nice to get that close without disturbing them.

They mainly breed on Svalbard, Greenland and northwest Russia, but now they have established themselves here in southern Norway and in Baltic areas as well.

Snowflake in Summer by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

Snowflake in Summer

I read that the snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) sometimes is called snowflake because of its similarity in flight to a snowflake fluttering in a winter storm.

This is from my first time seeing it in its black and white plumage during summer, among the pink moss campion (Silene acaulis) on Svalbard.

When it visits us in the south during winter, it has a more orange (and I think even more beautiful) plumage.

The Purple Sandpiper in Summer

Actually I like the purple sandpipers (Calidris maritima) better in their grey winter plumage, like we see them when they visit our part of the country.

This is how they look during summer, when they nest further north like on Svalbard where I met these.

One of the thousands of Arctic terns (Sterna paradisaea) nesting on Svalbard.

Together with lots of barnacle geese, they had found this really nice place among the pink moss campion (Silene acaulis) by a lagoon.

The Sabine's gull by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

The Sabine's gull

It was fun spotting this Sabine's gull (Xema sabini) for the first, and only, time this past summer- in a lagoon on Svalbard where the birds came really close if we sat down.

Only a very few couples of them breed on Svalbard. The rest breed on Greenland, along the west and north coast of Alaska, in Arctic Canada and in Arctic areas of Russia.

They migrate all the way to the southern west coast of Africa and the northern west coast of South America for winter.
