"Lupinus, commonly known as lupin, lupine, or regionally bluebonnet, is a genus of plants in the legume family Fabaceae. The genus includes over 199 species, with centres of diversity in North and South America. Smaller centres occur in North Africa and the Mediterranean. They are widely cultivated, both as a food source and as ornamental plants, but are invasive to some areas."

My first time in three trips seeing fields of lupins in full bloom! Despite their mass appeal as a photographic subject, lupins are an introduced species and are a declared noxious and invasive pest in New Zealand. Regional Councils and the Department of Conservation are actively undertaking eradication programs to control the spread of lupins, particularly in National Parks and key agricultural areas. However, their value as a tourist drawcard has also been taken into consideration with several well-known locations being retained to keep the Instagrammers happy!!
