British Rail : Greater London Network Map : 1 April 1965 : Central and Eastern scan

The sections of the diagram of British Rail's April 1965 "Greater London Network Map" issued here as a folder and that was also produced as a Quad Royal poster map. In the latter format the diagram carries the name of the designer, D.J. Lowten.

The diagram follows, in some ways, the Beck diagram of London Transport in depicting the complex suburban system of British Rail both north and south of the Thames. This is a relatively early outing for the new British Rail corporate identity.

I've had to scan this in two sections; this shows the bulk of the City of London along with the network running out north and east into Essex and, south of the River Thames, into Kent and south to Sussex.

Leicester City Transport : our concern is yours! : Official brochure of the Leicester City Transport : Grove Publishing Co. (Manchester) Ltd. : Manchester : nd [c.1950] : bus routes 1

Several Corporation, or City Transport Departments produced guides or handbooks in the mid-Twentieth Century many compiled and published on their behalf by the Grove Publishing Co. Ltd. of Manchester. This example is for Leicester City Transport and although undated is c.1950; the map is dated "50" and the talk is of the last tram to run and this was on 9 November 1949 when the diesel motor bus became triumphant!

The booklet has a detailed history of the Department as well as of the various bus routes operated. Leicester was one of the few places to adopt a numbering system that had different service numbers for inward and outward routes, including linked cross-city ones. As well as replacing tram routes the 'flexibility' of operation of the 'bus is shown with various examples of extensions into the city's growing suburbs, including new council housing estates.

The booklet also contains a history of Leicester and of public trabsport generally. As well as a route map there is a sketch map of the city centre area showing locations and stopping points and the booklet also contains many vignettes of buildings and monuments. These, along with the map are signed "C. Herbert" but I can find nothing about the artist. Many pages also have banners across the lower edge with the "You bet!" strap line and information about how to best use the city's bus services. These are often about passenger behaviour and safety. This somewhat echoes the title "Our Concern is Yours!"; a concern of safety by the Department as well as the fact that the going concern that was the Department was owned by the city and so was the citizens own 'concern'.

DEFRA Natural Environment White Paper - pressures on land illustration

Pressures on land - I recently contributed illustration for the DEFRA Natural Environment White Paper, which is launched today. DEFRA - The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is a government department in the UK. You can download the Natural Environment White Paper here
www.defra.gov.uk/environment/natural/whitepaper/

The Natural Environment White Paper is a bold and ambitious statement outlining the Government’s vision for the natural environment over the next 50 years, backed up with practical action to deliver that ambition.

Nature is sometimes taken for granted and undervalued. But people cannot flourish without the benefits and services our natural environment provides. A healthy, properly functioning natural environment is the foundation of sustained economic growth, prospering communities and personal wellbeing.
