Ancient Witnesses

Ancient Witnesses
As the stars rise, the stone remains — quiet, enduring, timeless.
These formations have watched the passage of millennia in silence, bearing witness to the slow arc of the cosmos above. I often wonder what stories they’d tell if they could speak — stories of fire, wind, and water… of creatures long gone… and now, of a lone photographer beneath their gaze.

Captured under a moonless sky, this is one of those nights where everything aligns — the air still, the Milky Way rising, and the sense that you’re standing in a place where time barely matters.

I return to these places not just to photograph them, but to feel something deeper — the connection between earth and sky, between the ancient and the now.

Half of an Edge-On Galaxy by TierraCosmos

Half of an Edge-On Galaxy

I went out to the local pond to try shooting a tracked panorama of the Milky Way. That failed, for technical reasons, but I did get a decent non-tracked frame of the Milky Way core with a portion of the pond in the foreground.

It looks like half of an edge-on galaxy of the type I used to photograph with telescopes. Of course, it is just that. We see our own Milky Way galaxy edge-on because Earth is in the plane of the galaxy, specifically in one of its spiral arms (called the Orion Arm). And this is a view looking toward the galaxy's center, which features the bright central "bulge" - just above the horizon in this image. Seems like if I just got on the other side of those trees I'd be able to see the entire edge-on disc of the galaxy ;).

This is a stack of 16 non-tracked images taken with a modified Canon 6D and Tamron 15-30mm lens at 15mm, f/2.8.O 1600, 25s, with dark frame calibration.

Utah, USA. Nearly got run over at 4am trying to get this shot. It's amazing how much traffic there is here at that time of day.

Pinnacles Pano by leonelpc24

Pinnacles Pano

Second trip to the Pinnacles this year, and this is one of two panoramas I captured. I wasn’t expecting the zodiacal light to stand out so clearly with all that galactic glow around it. Initially planned to shoot the sky pano with a shorter focal length for extra resolution, but after a long night (and a 2-hour drive still ahead), I opted for the usual 24mm focal length and still ended up with a 4GB image 😐

The Stars of Atacama

Milky Way dropping towards the horizon in Atacama desert. The Milky Way was clearly visible even with a half Moon in the area. The Atacama desert and Salar proved to be a natural wonder worth visiting.
