Another P186 this time crawling above the Shockoe Bottom area in downtown Richmond. I took position in a parking garage just across the street so I could get level with the tracks. From here you can see the rivers of steel and concrete curving every which way. It looks dark and gothic like a villain could live there. This kind of grandiose infrastructure from a past era is really a testament to how far car infrastructure has gone, it's ugly and beautiful at the same time.
This photo is the first decent result from a project I've been working at for a few years now. The question was, could I manage to get wide-angle close-ups, which I really like for showing animals in their surroundings, with small and skittish damselflies. And the answer is "yes, sometimes, but only with certain species." But it's not easy to get close enough -- the front of the lens was within a couple of inches of the damselfly. I was amazed that it hung around as long as it did.
So here's a Powdered Dancer perched on a Water Willow in the Rivanna River. It was much harder to get this close to the American Rubyspots that were also around.
I think the next step is going to be putting a remote camera on a tripod facing a popular perch, and waiting for the damselflies to get used to it. That way I won't have to worry about scaring them off their perches just by approaching.
