Sailing upstream on the Danube from Budapest to Passau, you'll journey through the enchanting Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its picturesque landscapes and cultural significance. Just before arriving in Melk, we were captivated by the stunning view of Abbey Schönbühel, also known as Schönbühel Monastery or Stift Schönbühel. The morning light, as we experienced, bathed this prominent landmark and its surroundings in breathtaking beauty. Later we learned that this historic Benedictine monastery boasts a heritage dating back to the 12th century when it was established as a religious sanctuary.
