Red Knots

Today I finally saw two red knots (Calidris canutus) for the first time this year. They were wanted on my 2025 list ツ

They only breed in the Arctic, but visit us during migration.

The ones today were in their rusty-orange breeding plumage like this one from the archive. But most often I see them in their grey juvenile or winter plumage during autumn.

Crossbills - Check! by Ranveig Marie Photography

Crossbills - Check!

A friend and I tented in the forest in southern Norway tonight, in hope of seeing the western capercaillie (storfugl (tiur/røy) in Norwegian). But only the black grouses (orrfugl) came to wake us up.

We photographed black grouses last week, so when a parrot crossbill (furukorsnebb) came above our tents this morning, we were more excited by that- since we didn't have it on our list this year. It is our first (and maybe last) time trying to get as many species as we can on one year in Norway.

And on our way down the hills today, we also met at least five red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra) for the first time this year- like this one from our island from the archive.

(Grankorsnebb in Norwegian)

Yesterday we also saw two ospreys (fiskeørn) on the way for the first time- a lovely sight!

Now we countinue our road trip farther east, to find the white stork that has visited many places in Norway lately, without us getting there in time- yet ッ We also hope to find a couple of more new species.

We will end our road trip back on Lista in the southwest tomorrow- where we started yesterday. We will join the BirdLife group from our town, birdwatching together. A nice way to enjoy the lovely spring weather!

Check out more red crossbill photos in the links below the line!

The Autumn Plumage by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Autumn Plumage

It is nice to have the northern wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe) back on all the regular places now.

Now they have a more grey plumage, but for autumn before they migrate again, they turn more orange like here.

Lovely Linnets

One of the beautiful (male) common linnets (Linaria cannabina), that stayed by our bird feeders for a long time last spring.

Yesterday I saw them in our neighbourhood for the first time this year. And I have just been out on my bike again today, listening to them an very many other birds singing in the nice spring weather.

Red Cutie

A male Eurasian bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula), from a hide in southern Norway one year ago.

Yesterday I booked a new stay for next week, together with the two I went with one year ago.

In addition to small birds, jays and squirrels, we hope for a goshawk and woodpeckers.

Today I will look for birds on Jæren in the sunshine with a friend.

September Treasures

Another photo from the same lovely September week, with many birds on and by our beach, as the common sandpiper that I uploaded earlier today.

Then it was the autumn migration, and many waders and a little flock of red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra) like this one, visited us. (This is a male.)

Now we are waiting for the spring migration any day.

IC3 V3.5_VIA_3

The train that I have made the most times in a lot of different versions. Also probably one of the most made trains by Danish LEGO train fans. After focussing on 8 studs wide LEGO trains, I made the decision to update some of my 6 wide trains again. Maybe instructions will come in the future as well, as this train is nearing retirement, probably within 5 years they will start to be taken out of service.
