Preening Plover

My first portrait of a northern lapwing this year (Vanellus vanellus, in the plover family), from Jæren 3.5 weeks ago.

I wish the background was better, but I just couldn't delete this one.

(Vipe (i lofamilien), in Norwegian)

I look forward to look for some more newly arrived migratory bird species tomorrow, like the ring ouzel (ringtrost in Norwegian), to add to this year's list which now numbers 135 bird species.

Bird Yoga by Ranveig Marie Photography

Bird Yoga

Many Eurasian rock pipits (Anthus petrosus) migrate to western or southern Europe for winter, but on our island we have many throughout the year.

This is one of 12-20 individuals that we have had on a small stretch of rocks between the beaches here during winter.

I don't know if some of them are the same that breed here, or if all of them have migrated from even further north.

Lovely Lark by Ranveig Marie Photography

Lovely Lark

I've hoped to meet the beautiful shore larks (Eremophila alpestris) for a long time. (In America, they are called horned larks.)

And in early January I finally met 4 of them, trying to find some food among the snow on a beach on Jæren. My first new bird species of the year!

In most of Europe, it is most often seen on seashore flats in winter, leading to the European name. In Europe, it primarily breeds in the mountains and far north. In North America, where there are no other larks to compete with, it can also be found on farmland, prairies, golf courses, airports, and in the desert.

Beautiful Buzzard by Ranveig Marie Photography

Beautiful Buzzard

A rough-legged buzzard (Buteo lagopus), also called rough-legged hawk in America, that we met close to the road, on a drive on Jæren last year.

It's the only time I've seen this beautiful species this close. I hope to photograph it some more from a hide one day.

Bow & Stretch by Ranveig Marie Photography

Bow & Stretch

One of two oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) that we met on the same islet, every day at sea on the island I'm from during the Easter break.

This one was ringed, and when it turned around I was able to see all seven numbers and register it.

It was ringed 7 years and 9 months earlier as a chick, on the island Røtinga near Os (about two hours north by car), and had not been registered before me.

Eurasian jays (Garrulus glandarius), photographed from the same hide as the sparrowhawk I uploaded this morning.

It was so fun to watch them fighting both with each other, and with the sparrowhawks for several days this past autumn.

Beautiful Wings by Ranveig Marie Photography

Beautiful Wings

One of two white storks (Ciconia ciconia) who visited our county two years ago.

It can take several years between each time they visit Norway, and they have never nested here.

One of them was ringed, and it was from a Swedish stork project - trying to re-establish the stork population they once had in southern Sweden.

Buzzard Greeting ツ by Ranveig Marie Photography

Buzzard Greeting ツ

We finally had some nice weather today, perfect for the national "Get Outdoors Day".

We went to Jæren, where we met this rough-legged buzzard (Buteo lagopus), also called rough-legged hawk in America. It has been by the same fields for 2.5 weeks now, and often sits close to the road. Finally I got to meet it as well, first on a lamp post right above the road as we came driving.

Even though we didn't find the beautiful horned larks I hoped for along the beaches, the buzzard made my day.

Pinch my arm! by Ranveig Marie Photography

Pinch my arm!

Two days ago I had an amazing nature experience. Since I first met a long-tailed tit (Aegithalos caudatus) more than 8 years ago with a bad camera, I've longed to meet it again.

Three days ago a bird photography friend unexpectedly met one on a walk, and told me about it. Together with another photography friend I went to look for it the next day, with no expectations at all.

But at the end of our walk it suddenly came right in front of us in the last tree of the trail! And it stayed close to us for almost one hour! It actually followed us to the car as well and chirped goodbye in a tree ツ
