Joining Me on My Adventures in Nature Along the Blue Ridge Parkway

A setting looking to the northeast to ridges and peaks of the Great Craggy Mountains (with Craggy Dome) and then more distant one of the N NC Blue Ridge Crest. This was while walking to the summit area of Craggy Pinnacle along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Film X Effects at Bryce Canyon National Park

An idea I got from a Flickr discussion on using Nik filters to create a certain look (www.flickr.com/groups/niksoftware/discuss/72157636332119723/). I tried out one of the ideas and saved it as a recipe to use with Color Efex Pro 5. I could initially make adjustments with the NEF/RAW image captured in DxO PhotoLab 5 but could then create something afterwards with that slightly off color look. Nik Analog Efex Pro 2 can also create something similar. The original image captured was an in-camera HDR TIFF.

It Looks To Be an Exciting Day in Bryce Canyon National Park!

A setting looking to the east-northeast while taking in views across hoodoos and other eroded formations present in Bryce Canyon National Park. This view is located at Sunset Point and just around sunrise. My thought on composing the image was to time an image captured around the point of sunrise, but some low clouds were present to minimize that look. I chose to work with HDR Efex Pro 2 to better bring that complete color setting in the image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

Chasing the Light of a New Day (Bryce Canyon National Park)

While at Sunset Point, taking in a morning sunrise in Bryce Canyon National Park. The view is looking to the east-northeast and across the hoodoos and eroded formations. To compose this setting, I brought the horizon a little bit higher into the image, so that I could create more of a sweeping view leading up to the point with the sunrise. I also used the in-camera HDR setting so that I could attempt to capture more of the dynamic range. The rest was later making adjustments with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Bryce Canyon National Park Still in Shadows Before the Sunrise

A setting looking to the east-northeast while taking in views across hoodoos and other eroded formations present at Sunset Point in Bryce Canyon National Park. My thought on composing this image was to have a sweeping view across the setting to my front. It was as I worked with DxO PhotoLab 5 that I decided to keep more of the landscape in kind of a silhouette or shadows to bring more of a focus to the sunrise and also that one contrail high in the skies above.

More of a silhouette look by making the foreground so dark. The original image captured was an in-camera HDR TIFF.

I could make the sun shine from pure desire (Bryce Canyon National Park)

While at Sunset Point but taking in a Sunday morning sunrise in Bryce Canyon National Park. The view is looking t o the east-northeast as the sun started lighting up low clouds near the horizon over the plateau of Powell Point. Given what I perceived as a large dynamic range between the bright area around the sun and the hoodoos still in shadows over Bryce Amphitheater, I used the in-camera HDR setting on a TIFF image with my Nikon D850 SLR camera. My thought on composing this image was to angle my camera slightly downward and create more of a sweeping view across the hoodoos leading up to the horizon and sunrise. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image. I chose to initially work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete setting in the image. I later exported another TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

The image caption is from a Steve Winwood song, The Higher Love, and seemed so appropriate as I looked across the hoodoos to the horizon with the sun rising over Bryce Canyon National Park.

Gold Medal Day in Bryce Canyon National Park

A setting looking to the east-northeast while taking in views across hoodoos and other eroded formations at Sunset Point in Bryce Canyon National Park. This was while taking in a sunrise after it had cleared some clouds around the horizon across Powell Point. For composing this image, I closed down on the aperture to bring out more of a starburst look with the sun. I also used an in-camera HDR option to attempt to capture more of the colors across the large dynamic with this national park setting. The rest was angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to create more of a sweeping view leading up to the horizon. I later used Aurora HDR Pro to initially process the image and DxO PhotoLab 5 to make final adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the completed image.

I Have Dreamt Under the Dawn of a New Day (Bryce Canyon National Park)

I Have Dreamt Under the Dawn of a New Day
And saw a sun rising with a golden light
Shadows clinging to places here and there
Chased away by light
Another day begins again on planet Earth
So while I am a mere mortal
Born of stardust
I will clap my hands in wonder
and celebrate today

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one morning in Bryce Canyon National Park. My thought on composing this image was to spend time before the actual sunrise lining up and metering images to capture for the sunrise. As this was about 20 or so minutes before the actual sunrise (and even more minutes with the low clouds off in the distance), I had time to work on setting a shutter speed and exposure setting for an image to capture. I decided to use the in-camera HDR setting with my Nikon D850 SLR camera. I could later work with Color Efex Pro and DxO PhotoLab 5 to make adjustments I wanted in post-production for the final image.

Exploration Bryce Canyon National Park

While walking along the Rim Trail with a view looking to the northeast across the hoodoos and other eroded formations present in this part of Bryce Canyon National Park. I decided to create a more sweeping view across this southern Utah landscape by angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward from the high ground I was on. I would bring the horizon higher into the image and perhaps create a sense of grandeur with the formations present like Powell Point, The Alligator, and Bristlecone Point. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Petroglyphs and Prehistoric Rock Art at the Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument

As I'd begun to plan this trip with the many stops at national parks and monuments, a co-worker had mentioned this as a place worthy of a stop. For this image, I focused on one section that seemed to be covered from edge to edge with stories and art. I felt that that best captured the idea for this monument. Anyone could then image all the stories and history being written and told...

The American West (Arches National Park)

I'd walked by this same spot a few years ago on my way back from the Pine Tree Arch and imagined this setting as being on an old movie or TV show from long ago. The riders would be on horse, taking views while heading to whatever location across the desert prairieland with sandstone fins on either side. Well, not off into the sunset as this would be a view to the northeast :-)

Under the Bridge...in Ohio (Cuyahoga Valley National Park)

When I found this point and the bridge view across the river valley with the Cuyahoga River, I was drawn to the side portion with the grassy meadow. I'm not certain what popped into my head to bring out the thought, but I found myself under the bridge and then lining myself up as centered down the middle as I could. The rest of the image was composing it to fill it appropriately with the bridge columns while including a little bit extra of the surrounding setting. I then found a mean exposure point under the bridge and adjusted the shutter speed to match. I was later able to work with control points and color control points in Capture NX2 to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted.
