Eastern Screech Owl

The Eastern Screech Owl or Eastern screech-owl (Megascops asio) is a small owl that is relatively common in Eastern North America, from Mexico to Canada. This species is native to most wooded environments of its distribution and, more so than any other owl in its range, has adapted well to manmade development, although it frequently avoids detection due to its strictly nocturnal habits.

She Finally Came Inside The Nesting Box

I'm going to assume this is Frick & Frack for now. Like clockwork, he called her to the box around 6:30 pm last night. He was smart this time. As soon as he saw she was on the outside perch, he left. Which gave her plenty of room in the doorway. This video started when she went from perch to door. She looked it over & tested out the bedding, did a little rearranging. I'm very hopeful she will choose it. She is larger than he is, takes up more floor space.

You Are Trying Too Hard

Boy sends out his mating call.
Girl shows up.
They sing a lovely little duet.
Boy gets overeager & crowds girl in the doorway.
Girl is pissed & fusses at him.
Boy nearly knocks girl off the perch in his haste to get away.
Girl recovers her balance and also leaves.
Boy needs to learn a little patience.
Listen carefully to hear the female fuss at the male with a bill clatter when he crowds her at the end.

Let The Games Begin! by Kaptured by Kala

Let The Games Begin!

On New Years Eve, a little before midnight, Frack sat in the opening to my backyard owl box & gave the inside a long look around before leaving. That is the box she raised babies in last season. Then at 6:20 am New Years Day, Frick went into the front yard owl box and was calling to Frack for her to come in. She did respond by coming & sitting on the outside perch while Frick called from inside. Right after this video quit, Frick flew off. Frack sat awhile, then flew to the opening, took 1 look inside and left immediately. The courtship is on. Like last season, Frick prefers the front box & Frack prefers the back box. We all know who has the last word. This was the 1st time this season for an owl to go inside a box & to see both owls at the same time. (this video is the front box this morning)

Look This Way Please

This is the last shot I kept & processed from Screech Owl Nesting Season 2024. I still can't get over how goofy looking Frick turned out to be. Apparently, he was a good provider since they successfully raised & fledged babies. I hope they return next season.

One Last Portrait Shot Of Frack

I was looking for her in one spot when something made me look up & she was literally right over my head. I moved out of the danger zone & took this shot. She was busy watching a squirrel.

Aaaand Frick Is Back To His Stink Eye

June 4th was the last time I saw an owl in my yard. Fitting that it was Frick giving me the stink eye one last time.

That One Time Frick Had No Stink Eye

Going through my shots of Frick, I found one where he actually is not doing his usual stink eye glare. He does, however, still look really intense.

Little Frito Portrait

I believe this is owlet #3. Also takes after Frack but noticeably smaller than owlet #2. I only saw this one on the last day of there being babies in the box. Probably the youngest baby. Taken at 6:30 am June 1st. I saw Frito again around 8:30 pm sticking its head way out of the hole but it was too dark for photos. Fledged during the night because the box was empty the next morning. This is my last owlet photo although I still have more of the parents I'm going thru.

Freya Portrait

I believe this is a 2nd owlet. Takes after Frack with a rounder head & less noticeable ear tufts. Still possible there was only 1 baby since I never got to see 2 little heads at the same time & have not seen any babies since fledging but most times there are several babies in there.
