Vaglio Basilicata, loc. Macchia di Rossano
(see the site on Pleiades)
The sanctuary, in the territory of the Lucanians, is attributed to the Italic goddess Mephitis/Mefitis on the basis of the preponderance of inscribed dedications to her, though other deities were also worshipped at the site. No temple has been discovered; cult practice seems to have focused on the monumental altar in the center of the "sagrato," or sacred plaza flanked by porticoes. Based on current evidence, the life of the sanctuary stretched from the mid-4th c. BCE until the 1st half of the 1st c. CE, with various expansions and rebuildings during that span.
Classical-Hellenistic period, ca. 5th-4th c. BCE
Found in the Sanctuary of Mefitis in the Valle d'Ansanto at Rocca San Felice (see on Pleiades)
Photographed on display in, and in the collection of, the Museo Irpino, Avellino, Campania, Italy
