Old photo, fresh slider: One of those cloudscapes/sunsets where one goes "Wow!", grabs the camera, and runs out onto the balcony to take a photo. Well, at least I do ;) We had a few of those sunsets this summer and early autumn, but since the house is still scaffolded and the (freshly galvanized) balcony parapets aren't properly re-installed, yet, the balcony is off-limits – so I had to dig into my archives to satisfy this certain "Sunday sunset slider mood".

Photographed with the little Lumix LX100 that is capable of taking quite nice light- and sunstars – and that is also a little prone to flares, but I rather liked this rainbow flare, so I decided to keep it in the image. Just like the airplane with its vapour trail which looks a little like a shooting star – wishful thinking, I know ;). And since it's (Sliders) Sunday, I also tweaked the sky's colours in Color Efex Pro – the original colours were mostly blue with some gold tones and hints of purple in the clouds, but the sunstar was already brightly orange in the Raw file. It's just a fun shot that I thought should finally see the light of day. I hope you like it.

Altes Foto, neuer Slider. Normalerweise schnappe ich mir die Kamera und renne auf den Balkon, wenn ich einen besonders schönen Sonnenuntergang (oder besonders interessante Wolken) sehe. Da unser Haus aber immer noch eingerüstet ist und die frisch verzinkten Balkongitter noch nicht wieder fest und sicher montiert sind, ist der Balkon weiterhin tabu – also musste ein Archivfoto für den Sliders Sunday her. Eins, das ich mit der kleinen Lumix LX100 gemacht habe, die in der Lage ist, recht schöne Licht- und Sonnensterne zu fabrizieren. Flare-anfällig ist sie dabei auch ein wenig, aber wenn dabei so ein hübscher kleiner Regenbogenfleck herauskommt, bleibt er im Bild, genau wie das Flugzeug mit seinem Kondensstreifen, das ein wenig wie eine Sternschnuppe aussieht – Wunschdenken, ich weiß. Aber Ihr könnt Euch ja trotzdem was wünschen :)

Für Sliders Sunday habe ich in Color Efex ein wenig an den Farbreglern gedreht. Die Originalfarben des Himmels waren überwiegend noch blau mit ein paar goldenen Highlights und einem Hauch von Lila. Aber der Sonnenstern war schon im Original leuchtend orange. Ein reines Spaßfoto, das mal an der Reihe war. Ich hoffe, es gefällt Euch.

Actually this was meant for the first Sunday of Advent – yesterday –, but I didn't get around to upload it (and neither to take my MM shot), so this is an unusual Monday contribution, not a macro, but actually a Monday slider. It's also another photo from Hot Pixel Universe, a universe only the LX100 can make visible. You may wonder about the starry sky above the Deutsche Dom (New Church), because stars are usually difficult to see in a brightly illuminated city because of light pollution. Unless you shoot with an LX100, of course ;)

If I remember correctly, long exposure noise reduction had been activated in the camera when I took this photo at the 2018 Festival of Lights. I don't know if that caused the hot pixels, or if the LX100's sensor gets particularly warm during long exposures. The hot pixels are only visible against a totally black sky, not against a blue hour sky, for instance, and especially enhancing the clarity in LR brings them out clearly.

The hot pixels aren't really a big issue, because it's easy to remove them in post. But here I actually liked them, because I think that they add such a festive look to this beautifully illuminated scene, so I decided to leave them in the image. Or rather: I added them back to the photo from an older, already processed version of this shot, because when I re-processed this image just the other day in DXO PhotoLab 5, the amazing DeepPRIME denoising technology detected the hot pixels and removed them. I hope you like Hot Pixel Universe :)

Eigentlich wollte ich dieses Foto gestern zum 1. Advent hochladen, bin aber leider nicht dazu gekommen. Ihr fragt Euch jetzt wahrscheinlich, woher das Sternenmeer kommt, mitten in der Stadt, die zum Festival of Lights sogar noch heller beleuchtet ist als sonst. Nun, es handelt sich hierbei um ein ganz besonderes Universum, das Hot-Pixel-Universum, das nur die LX100 sichtbar machen kann ;)

Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, war damals die Langzeitrauschunterdrückung in der Kamera aktiviert. Ob mir das nun die vielen "Sterne" beschert hat oder der Sensor der LX100 bei Langzeitbelichtungen außergewöhnlich warm wird, kann ich nicht sagen. Ich weiß nur, dass ich sie auch bei einigen anderen Nachtfotos vom Festival of Lights hatte, aber immer nur bei bereits völlig schwarzem Himmel, nie z.B. zur Blauen Stunde, und erst das Verstärken der Klarheit in LR hebt die kleinen Pünktchen so richtig hervor.

Das Entfernen wäre auch keine große Sache, tatsächlich erkennt mittlerweile die Entrauschungstechnologie DeepPRIME in DXO PhotLab 5 diesen Bildfehler so zuverlässig, dass mir das Programm jetzt, als ich das Foto noch einmal neu bearbeitet habe, die Pixel fast sämtlichst entfernt hat. Da sie mir hier aber so gut gefallen haben, weil sie dem Foto so ein weihnachtliches, festliches Strahlen verleihen, habe ich mir die Sternlein aus einer bereits 2018 bearbeiteten Version des Fotos einfach zurückgeholt :) Ich hoffe, Euch gefällt meine kleine "Deutscher Dom unter Sternenmeer"-Spielerei :)

Down in the basement where entering is off limits for unauthorized persons... But it's Halloween, and what would you do? Enter at your own risk.

So imagine the usual group of friends, students, probably, who want to spend an adventurous weekend in an abandoned old house at the end of the street (or, even better: in the middle of nowhere), in a house that is surrounded by a dark, gloomy mystery. They want to have some fun, and they also want to solve that mystery. You all know what will happen in the course of that weekend. First, there will be strange sounds that our group of friends will dismiss as "old house sounds". But the sounds get stranger, more threatening, so they will start looking for the origins of those sounds which seem to come from the basement (it's always the basement or the attic, isn't it?), a pitch dark, ice cold basement filled with eerie sounds. Will they go down there? You bet they will... and would you? I'll leave the rest of that story to your imagination. But I can tell you as much: I went down into that basement, by my own choice, by my free will (at least that's what I thought at the time).

Since I came back to tell the story, it's obvious that there were no supernatural powers in that basement. But it was a creepy place anyways, and it really had been pitch black down there. Without flashlights we'd have been lost. That basement has been the boiler room of an old prison. Accordingly, that sign on the now "unemployed" door says "Boiler room! No admittance for unauthorized persons! The director". I'd have never explored that basement on my own. I was there with Sabine.R back in September 2018. That prison, which had started of as a regular district court prison in 1901, has seen some very real horrors in the early 1930s. Irgendwo im Keller...

... mitten in Berlin... Oder befindet sich dieser düstere Keller überhaupt in Berlin und nicht etwa doch in einem einsam (sehr einsam) gelegenen, verlassenen, von einem tiefdunklen Geheimnis umgebenen Haus mitten im Nirgendwo?

Wäre dies der Schauplatz eines Gruselfilms, dann wäre es so. Dafür nehme man die üblichen Verdächtigen, eine Gruppe von Freunden (Studenten wahrscheinlich), die ein aufregendes Wochenende in diesem Haus verbringen wollen. Unsere Freundestruppe will einen draufmachen, Spaß haben, aber natürlich am Ende auch das Geheimnis dieses Hauses gelöst haben. Gesagt, getan. Und erst sieht auch alles nach eine großen Spaß aus und das "Geheimnis" ist wohl doch nur eine Geschichte ohne echten Hintergrund.

Aber dann, als es bereits dunkel wird, sind plötzlich seltsame Geräusche im Haus zu vernehmen, die unser Grüppchen zunächst als "Altes-Haus-Geräusche" abtut. Nur werden diese Geräusche mit jedem Quäntchen Tageslicht, das allmählich schwindet, immer bedrohlicher und unerklärlicher. Ist an dem Geheimnis evtl. doch was dran? Unsere abenteuerlustige (oder soll ich sagen: schon leicht lebensmüde) Truppe begibt sich also auf die Suche nach dem Ursprung der seltsamen Geräusche. Sie scheinen aus dem Keller zu kommen (es ist immer der Keller oder der Dachboden, nicht wahr?). Einem Keller, dessen Tür mit mehreren Schlössern verammelt ist und auf der ein eindeutig formuliertes Verbotsschild zu finden ist. Es kommt, wie es kommen muss... man begibt sich die Treppe hinab in die Finsternis und das Unheil nimmt seinen Lauf...

Oder doch nicht? Ich bin in diesem, tastächlich stockdunklen, Keller gewesen – freiwillig. Aber nicht allein, das hätte ich mich nie getraut, so gruselig war es da unten. Ich war im September 2018 mit Sabine.R dort gewesen, ohne Taschenlampen wären wir dort nicht weit gekommen. Es handelt sich um den Heizungskeller eines alten Berliner Gefängnisses (wie auch in "schönstem" Amtsdeutsch auf dem Verbotsschild an der ausrangierten Tür zu lesen ist). Dieses 1901 erbaute Gefängnis war ursprünglich ein reguläres Amtsgerichtsgefängnis gewesen, hat dann aber in den frühen 1930er-Jahren ganz realen Horror erlebt. Creepy encounter with the Bogeyman. Or maybe the Boogie Man? Because who says abandoned sanatoriums must be creepy places haunted by the poor souls of the people who once had been treated there? The artists that have decorated a wing of one of the many buildings of this long abandoned lung sanatorium nearby Berlin must have believed the latter, because almost all of the art there is horror-themed, just like this enormous creature consisting of branches (Blair Witch, anyone?). But, wait a minute... There are branches, but there are also cables, and coloured light bulbs. Party lights! And seriously, can a creature who partly consists of colourful party lights be evil? Just imagine him all lit up like a Christmas Tree ;)

This reminded me of an anecdote my mother, magrit k., once had heard during a guided tour at Beelitz Heilstätten (another old, but no longer abandoned sanatorium also nearby Berlin). And that anecdote gives rise to doubts that these sanatoriums were per se sad places, places of pain and suffering: Back in the day (at the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century), as you might have guessed, men's and women's dormitories were strictly seperated from each other. But that didn't stop the patients from finding ways to visit each other at night. How? At one point, someone had found access to the underground logistic passages which connected the entire building complex. Those passages were off-limits for the patients, of course, but has "off-limits" ever stopped anyone? So, at least for some time, there there must have been quite a busy nightlife with regular, merry get-togethers among the patients, before the hospital's management noticed what was going on, and put an end to those "indecencies" by locking the passages for anyone except authorised personnel ;)

So maybe also this sanatorium isn't haunted by lost souls, but the spirits that linger there are of a good-natured, happy kind instead. And the creature in my photo isn't the Bogeyman, but DJ Boogie Man. So let the fun begin :)

Bi-Ba Butzemann

Gut, nachts im Dunkeln, womöglich noch ganz allein, möchte ich dieser schauerlichen Zweig-Kreatur (die Blair Witch lässt grüßen), die ich 2018 bei einem Fotowalk mit Flickr-Freunden in einem Gebäude einer verlassenen Lungenheilstätte bei Berlin (nicht Beelitz) gefunden hatte, nicht begegnen. Vielleicht ist sie aber gar nicht so furchterregend, wie sie auf den ersten Blick aussieht? Denn wenn man genauer hinsieht, merkt man, dass der Körper dieses Butzemanns nicht nur aus Zweigen, sondern auch aus Kabeln und bunten Glühlampen besteht. Und eine bunte Party-Lichterkette ist doch so ziemlich das Gegenteil von furchterregend, oder?

Und wer sagt eigentlich, dass in verlassenen Heilstätten auf ewig die verlorenen Seelen der armen ehemaligen "Insassen" herumspuken? Vielleicht spuken sie ja herum, haben aber ihren Spaß dabei? Das lässt zumindest eine Anekdote vermuten, die meine Mutter (magrit k.) mal bei einer Führung durch die ehemalige Lungenheilstätte Beelitz erzählt bekommen hatte: Zur Glanzeit von Beelitz, Ende des 19. / Anfang des 20. Jhdt., waren die Schlafsäle von Männlein und Weiblein natürlich brav voneinander getrennt, handelte es sich doch schließlich um ein anständiges Haus. Was allerdings die Patienten nicht davon abhielt, sich des Nachts gegenseitigen Besuch abzustatten. Wie? Irgendjemand hatte wohl mal die – fahrlässigerweise unverschlossenen, aber natürlich nicht öffentlichen – Versorgungsgänge unterhalb der Gebäude entdeckt. Beelitz muss also eine zeitlang ein recht reges Nacht- und Partyleben gehabt haben. Bis zu dem Zeitpunkt, als jemand von der Krankenhausleitung das bunte Treiben bemerkt und dafür gesorgt hatte, dass die Versorgungsgänge nunmehr stets verschlossen zu sein hatten.

Vielleicht ist also dieser Butzemann gar keine finstere Kreatur, sondern ein fideler DJ, der zur Geisterstunde die Platten zur allnächtlichen Sanatoriumsparty auflegt. Wie heißt es schon im bekannten, evtl. bis dato falsch interpretierten Kinderlied: "Es tanzt ein Bi-Ba-Butzemann in unserm Haus herum, fidebum. (...) Er rüttelt sich, er schüttelt sich (...), es tanzt ein Bi-Ba-Butzemann in unserm Haus herum." Vielleicht haben wir hier gerade wieder einen Mythos entzaubert ;)

Another spontaneous upload of an old(er) picture, one that, hadn't I picked it for Window Wednesday today, would have probably gone back to another months- or even year-long slumber on my harddrive. So up it goes, before I get second thoughts about it (which happens all too often with too many images).

A color key / selective colour experiment which I don't do all too often; in fact, regarding uploads to Flickr, I think it's a first, but I have a few other images in the making with that processing technique. There's so much going on here with the light and the shadows – which add so many extra patterns to what is in that place anyway – that I thought it might help to structure the image if I left the red chairs red, those on the folding-screen included, because I thought that that's an extra layer of real vs. painted in combination with the layer of black and white vs. colour. I'm not sure if it really works as an image, but I'm showing it to you anyways, because otherwise... (see the first sentence of my description).

I had started to process it with selective colour months ago, so that idea wasn't one I got today, but the inclusion of the drawn chairs on the folding-screen was a new idea I got just today (and not all chairs there had been red, so I had to actually paint a few of them to make my idea work properly) when I re-processed the image in DXO PhotoLab, Lightroom and PS. Photo taken back in 2018 with the fabulous LX100 at the Königliche Gartenakademie (a beautiful garden centre nearby the Botanical Garden). This is one of the repurposed greenhouses, and greenhouses practically consist of nothing but windows, so I thought it would be perfect for Window Wednesday.

When summer makes way for autumn, all that is left of it are memories of colours, sunshine, warmth... memories that can sparkle like stardust. Or so ;) Anyways, that's what I thought when I noticed the colourful light reflections on a few petals of a bunch of purplish rose coloured Asters that stood next to my living room window two and a half weeks ago. The enchanting light play caused by a decorative glass element in the shape of a huge diamond that I keep on my window sill instantly caught my eye, and it also felt like a farewell greeting of summer, so I grabbed the LX100 and took a few captures. Slide-ified for Sunday in Analog Efex where I used the Zoom Blur filter, a vignette and one of the Photo Plate "Concrete" filters to create a dreamy, starry, outer space like effect. I also did some dodging and burning in PS and highlighted the colours and details on the illuminated petals in Luminar AI.

Wenn der Sommer Platz macht für den Herbst, dann bleibt uns nur noch die Erinnerung an warme, sonnige, entspannte Tage. Erinnerungen, die aber funkeln können wie Sternenstaub. Oder so ähnlich ;) Jedenfalls waren das in etwa meine Gedanken, als ich vor gut zweieinhalb Wochen ein zauberhaftes Lichtspiel auf den Blättern eines Sommerastern-Straußes am Wohnzimmerfenster entdeckte. Auf dem Fensterbrett liegt auch ein Glasdekoteil in der Form eines riesigen Diamanten, der immer sehr schöne Regenbogen-Lichtspiegelungen an die Wand zaubert – und dieses Mal auch auf den Strauß Blumen (die sonst immer auf dem Tisch stehen). Und so habe ich mir dann auch gleich die LX100 geschnappt, um ein paar Fotos vom Abschiedsgruß des Sommers 2021 zu machen :)

While flipping through my Lightroom catalogue in search of an image for Window Wednesday I stumbled upon this oldie from November 2018 which I'd taken during a very nice photowalk with Flickr friends. Somehow, this photo felt finally "ready for upload", but I also knew that if I don't process and upload it today, I probably won't do so tomorrow, because it's possible that that "ready moment" has passed by then. Weird, I know, but that's the way it sometimes is ;) This is why I post the image already today.

The image shows the river Spree and the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (MELH) in Berlin's Government district. I've already posted a slightly different photo taken at the same photowalk earlier; I'd taken that photo from the bridge that you can see on the left. You can find it in the first comment, in my description for that photo you'll also find more info on the MELH, if you are interested. While I (re-)processed the image this evening, I was humming Patti Smith's song "Poeple Have The Power" to myself (I wonder why...Freud would know), and I thought it would be an apt title for an image showing a governmental building ;)

Photo taken during the same photowalk, with the same camera, and in the same spot as my previous upload for Sliders Sunday (photo in the first comment) – the Holsteiner Ufer in the Berlin borough Moabit. It had been the last hot day of 2019, and judging by its opened beak, this crow was feeling hot as well. Luckily, plenty of water was nearby, as the Holsteiner Ufer is a riverbank along the Spree. At first, the crow didn't take notice of me while I was taking its photo, but after a while it began to scrutinize me curiously. But it didn't fly or walk away. City crows are tough ;)

The sliding was done entirely in the DXO FilmPack plug-in, two run-throughs combined. At first I'd applied the film simulation "Generic Fuji Astia 100", a texture ("scratches"), a light leak ("colour 1"), some blur, and the "old paper 1" frame. And next I'd applied the Agfa Precisa 100 film simulation, a glass frame (colour), and a warm filter (at 28 % density).

You might wonder about the title. Well, what you see in the photo is the river Spree taking one of its many bends across Berlin, and this particular area that you can see on the opposite river bank is also called "Spree-Bogen", "Spree bend". This area used to be the home of the Meierei C. Bolle (dairy farm C. Bolle) that was founded in 1879 during one of Berlins particularly strong periods of growth. The two glass towers belong to an U-shaped building ensemble that was the (rented!) seat of our Federal Ministry of the Interior from 1999 - 2015.

This is one of the images that needed time to "develop". I've tried several different processing approaches over the past months, and I was never really happy with any of the results, because I always found the sky too blue, the image too bright, the clouds not nice enough... I once even replaced the sky in Luminar, but didn't like that, either. So back to the original sky, and just the other day, when I gave it another go, I finally stumbled upon the solution. In a first new version I had processed the image in HDR Efex, kind of liked it, but still found the image too bright. Just for fun, and for comparison purposes, I decided to also process the image in Aurora HDR, tried a few of my favourite presets that I use as starting point in Aurora, and... Bingo! In the "Dramatic" preset collection, there's a preset called "Sleepy Drama" which desaturates the blue tones and adds a darker look to any image – and that did it, at least for me. I still tweaked the preset's settings to my liking, and, in Color Efex, added some Brilliance and Warmth. I hope you like the image :)

Bolle reiste jüngst zu Pfingsten...

Blick auf das Spree-Bogen-Areal, gelegen an einem von sehr vielen Spreebögen durch Berlin. Auf diesem Areal wurde 1879, während einer besonders starken Wachstumsphase Berlins, die Meierei C. Bolle erbaut, deren Gründer Carl Bolle allerdings nichts mit dem bekannten (und so lustig wie hintergründig makabren) Bolle-Lied zu tun hat, dessen gesamten Text (bitte alle Strophen lesen, es lohnt sich) Ihr hier finden könnt: STRG/CTRL+ de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolle_reiste_jüngst_zu_Pfingsten. Es passt nur gerade so schön zu Pfingsten ;)

Die beiden Glastürme sind Teil des U-förmig gestalteten Spree-Bogen-Gebäudes, das von 1999 bis 2015 das Bundesministerium des Innern beherbergte (zur Miete!). Diese Bild hat sprichwörtlich Zeit zum Entwickeln gebraucht, ich habe über die Monate immer mal wieder diverse Ansätze ausprobiert, aber es hatte bislang nie richtig "Klick" gemacht, immer war mir der Himmel zu blau, das Bild zu hell, die Wolken nicht schön genug... Einmal habe ich sogar in Luminar den Himmel ausgetauscht, was mir aber auch nicht gefallen hat und sowieso nur eine Notlösung sein sollte, weshalb ich schlussendlich doch beim Original-Himmel geblieben bin.

Kürzlich habe ich dann noch einmal einen Anlauf in HDR Efex gestartet, was mir schon recht gut gefiel, mir aber immer noch zu hell war. Nur aus Spaß und auch zum direkten Vergleich habe ich mich dann noch durch meine Lieblings-Presets in Aurora HDR geklickt. Meistens nehme ich in Aurora eines der "Dramatic"- oder "Artistic"-Presets als Ausgangspunkt für die weitere Bearbeitung. Hier war es das "Sleepy Drama", das – endlich – den Knoten löste. Für den "sleepy" Look werden die Blautöne entsättigt und für das "Drama" wird die Tonwertkurve in Richtung Tiefen korrigiert. Ich habe dann noch eigene Anpassungen vorgenommen und abschließend in Color Efex etwas "Brilliance and Warmth" hinzugefügt. Mit dem Ergebnis bin ich recht zufrieden, zufrieden genug jdf., um es Euch zu zeigen. Ich hoffe, das Bild gefällt Euch auch :)

Spring scene from happy pre-Covid times, photographed at the Britzer Garten, one of the largest and most beautiful public parks in Berlin. Originally, the park had been created for the Bundesgartenschau 1985 (BUGA – a biennial federal horticulture show in Germany), the first BUGA to be held in Berlin (West). After the BUGA, the park area had been extended and was re-opened as the Britzer Garten in 1989. Apart from the everyday recreational park goings-on, there are annual flower shows such as the Tulipan in spring, the Rhododendron and Azalea Show, or the Dahlienfeuer ("Dahlia Fire") in autumn, plus other festivals and events throughout the year. Back in 1985, the BUGA had been a huge thing, and I remember well the automated recording on the metro – every morning when I went to school, and every afternoon when I returned home from school – which was played when we passed a certain interchange station: "Passengers travelling to the Bundesgartenschau, please change here for the U7."

Ein Foto aus glücklicheren Vor-Corona-Zeiten, aufgenommen im Britzer Garten. Der Britzer Garten ist einer der größten und schönsten Parks in Berlin. Die weitläufige Parkanlage wurde für die Bundesgartenschau 1985 gestaltet, nach der BUGA noch erweitert und dann 1989 in ihrer jetzigen Form als "Britzer Garten" wiedereröffnet. Der Park bietet viel, z.B. einen wunderschönen Rosengarten, ein Freilandlabor, die Parkeisenbahn sowie jährlich wiederkehrende Blumenschauen (die Tulipan im Frühling, die Rhododendron- und Azaleenschau sowie das Dahlienfeuer im Herbst), außerdem jede Menge Extra-Events wie die Sonnenwendfeier, Walpurgisnacht, St.-Martins-Umzüge und, als Höhepunkt, das "Feuerblumen und Klassik Open-Air" mit vielen Konzerten und großem Abschlussfeuerwerk. Momentan ist der Britzer Garten zwar geöffnet, die Sonderveranstaltungen mit viel Publikum sind aber allesamt auf 2022 verschoben worden. Zumindest die Blumenschauen sollen aber wie geplant stattfinden, da der Park so großzügig angelegt ist, dass man sich sehr gut aus dem Weg gehen kann. Ich erinnere mich noch sehr gut an die Zeit der BUGA '85, als ich jeden Morgen und Nachmittag – auf dem Schulweg – in der U-Bahn an einer bestimmten Umsteigestation die aufgezeichnete Ansage hörte: "Besucher der Bundesgartenschau steigen bitte hier in die U7 Richtung Rudow um."

It's weekend, so I invite you to take a seat in the golden comfy chair and relax :) And doesn't it look really super inviting and comfortable? I think this could even be one of those extensible multi-purpose armchairs that you can turn into an even comfier chaise longue in less than no time. Perfect. Just imagine all the possibilities :) How about a weekend full of binge watching your favourite TV series or movies, for instance? So bring on the delicious snacks, the full Monty (and did I hear anyone say "pandemic weight gain"? Endlich Wochenende, nehmt also Platz in diesem unglaublich gemütlichen Sessel, der sogar ein wenig so aussieht, als sei er zu einer noch viel bequemeren Chaiselongue ausziehbar. Perfekt also für zwei super entspannte (das Wort "faul" möchte ich in diesem Zusammenhang nicht in den Mund nehmen) Tage. Wie wäre es z.B. mit einem Film- oder Serienmarathon? Ich hole schon mal das Knabberzeug (und das Wort "Corona-Plauze" möchte ich an dieser Stelle auch nicht hören) und Ihr sucht das Programm aus :)

In diesem Sinne: Habt ein schönes WE, passt gut auf Euch auf – und lasst es Euch gut gehen.

Before I continue my casual series of the Berlin Olympic Stadium, here's another photo from my visit to the Olympic Village of 1936 with 3-day-beard / 3-tage-bart, bananahh, and magritknapp.

Heavily (over-)processed for Sliders Sunday. It shows the Olympic Village's gym. I wish it were possible to re-visit the Olympic Village (or what is left of it) with a tripod and a wider lens, but guided tours have been discontinued in 2020 – not because of the Corona/Covid-19 situation, but because the site of the Olympic Village is under (re-)construction as a housing area called "G.O.L.D. Gartenstadt Olympisches Dorf von 1936®" ("Gold Garden City Olympic Village of 1936"). So actually we were very, very lucky to still have gotten hold of a tour back in September 2018 – a once-in-a-lifetime photographic opportunity. It also means that I have to make do with the photographic yield achieved mostly with my little Lumix LX100 (and without a tripod, because I thought that I couldn't bring one – a stupid mistake).

In 2018 the Lumix had still been new and I hadn't figured out all the functions properly, yet (well, I still haven't); this image would have definitely benefited from the use of the HDR bracketing mode, but it simply hadn't been on my radar back then. So this image also was the ultimate test for the new DxO Photo Lab 4: an image with obvious flaws such as lots of noise and mushy details. DxO PL 4 has a new AI de-noising technology called "Deep Prime" (which only works with RAW files, so make sure to process the file in DxO first before you export it to LR). And I must say that I'm quite impressed. Since this image is obviously more about atmosphere than image quality I also added a subtle HDR look in HDR Efex (preset "End of the road" tweaked to my liking and blended in with the original file in PS at 79 % opacity); I like the soft glow and slightly painterly look HDR Efex added to it. I hope you like it, too, and that you can forgive the poor all-over image quality :)

And speaking of atmosphere: The photo board in the background displays original images from the Olympic Summer Games of 1936 – and the image on the far right is a portrait of Jesse Owens, the athlete who dominated the games of '36. This, the lifetime friendship he had built with German long jumper Luz Long (Long was fatally injured during WWII in 1943, but the Owens and Long families have stayed in contact to this day), and the fact Jesse Owens also was the undisputed crowd favourite, publicly reduced the ugly racist ideology of the Nazi regime to absurdity – alas, as we all know, only for those two summer weeks of 1936...

Bevor es mit meiner losen Serie von Berliner Olympiastadion weitergeht, streue ich für den Sliders Sunday ein weiteres Foto vom Olympischen Dorf in Elstal ein. Da die (geführten) Touren dort leider eingestellt wurden (nicht etwa wegen der Corona-Situation, sondern weil mittlerweile die Bauarbeiten für die neue Wohnanlage "G.O.L.D. Gartenstadt Olympisches Dorf von 1936®" weiter fortgeschritten sind), war der Besuch dort (zusammen mit 3-day-beard / 3-tage-bart, bananahh, and magritknapp) tatsächlich eine einmalige fotografische Gelegenheit – und das bedeutet auch, dass ich mit den Fotos vorliebnehmen muss, die ich damals überwiegend mit meiner kleinen Lumix LX100 (und blöderweise ohne Stativ, weil ich dachte, ich dürfte keins mitbringen) gemacht habe.

Insbesondere diese Aufnahme hätte sicher von der Verwendung des HDR-Belichtungsreihen-Modus profitiert, aber da die Kamera damals noch recht neu war, hatte ich diese Feinheiten noch nicht auf dem Schirm gehabt. Das Resultat ist, insbesondere hier, sicher eindeutig mehr unter Atmosphäre denn unter Bildqualität einzuordnen. Eine Einzelaufnahme, bei der aufgrund der schwierigen Lichtverhältnisse in der Turnhalle des Olympischen Dorfes die dunklen Bereiche nach dem Aufhellen reichlich verrauscht sowie nur noch mit spärlichen Details versehen waren. Da konnte sich dann gleich mal das gerade erschienene DxO Photo Lab 4 beweisen. Und ich finde, das Resultat kann sich durchaus sehen lassen, wenn man ein Auge zudrückt ;) DxO hat das brandneue KI-Entrauschungstool "Deep Prime" an Bord, das tatsächlich mit zu dem Besten zählt, was es momentan in diesem Bereich gibt (wie z.B. Topaz DeNoise AI, das auch hervorragende Arbeit leistet, aber DxO legt hier noch einmal eine Schippe drauf). "Deep Prime" funktioniert übrigens nur mit den originalen RAW-Dateien, sodass man den Workflow entsprechend anpassen muss: Die (Vor-)Entwicklung in DxO muss der erste Schritt sein, erst danach kann man z.B. in LR oder anderen Programmen weitermachen.

Hier habe ich das Foto nach den grundlegenden Anpassungen nur noch in HDR Efex nachberabeitet, ausgehend vom Preset "Ende der Straße" (zu finden unter "Surreal"), das ich noch angepasst habe und anschließend mit dem Originalbild in PS mit 79 % Deckkraft überblendet habe. Also, wie gesagt, seid bitte bzgl. Bildqualität / Details / Schärfe dieses Mal nicht ganz so streng :)

Apropos Atmosphäre: Die Fotowand im Hintergrund zeigt Originalbilder der Spiele von 1936 – und ganz rechts seht Ihr ein Portrait von Jesse Owens, dem unangefochtenen Star der Spiele. Die sportliche Überlegenheit Jesse Owens', die Freundschaft mit dem deutschen Weitsprung-Star Luz Long (die übrigens bis heute von beiden Familien gepflegt wird, auch wenn Long bereits 1943 im Krieg tödlich verwundet wurde) sowie die Tatsache, dass Owens der absolute Publikumsliebling war, führten damals die hässliche Nazi-Rassentheorie öffentlich ad absurdum. Aber, wie wir alle wissen, leider nur während jener zwei Wochen im Sommer 1936...
