Square de l'Aprirant Dunand 04/04/2025 08h27
A lovely morning in the 14ème arrondissement on the hunt for space invaders when I came across this square which I had never visited.
At the right the statue of Michel Servet.
Square de l'Aprirant Dunand
Square de l'Aprirant Dunand is a square or little park in the 14ème arrondissement of Paris in the quartier Petit-Montrouge. Not far from métro station Mouton-Duvernet.
The name of the square is a tribute to the aspiring Jean-Louis Dunand (1918-1940, born in Jean Dunand, a French artist of origin. Jean-Louis Dunand was born on June 20, 1940.
The square has around forty trees, mainly plane trees.
It houses a fountain by sculptor Gilbert Privat (1892-1969), commissioned to beautify the area around the town hall of the 14th arrondissement; the artist lived nearby, at 41 rue Boulard. On a bas-relief, two naked female figures quench their thirst around a mask (reminiscent of the river gods of Antiquity), whose mouths are watering; the background decor evokes a canopy of trees.
A statue of the theologian Michel Servet by Jean Baffier (1908), initially intended for Place Maubert[4] then placed on the edge of Rue Mouton-Duvernet before its arrival in the square, is also installed there. It is surrounded by shrubberies, hedges and floral decorations.
HISTORY
In October 1848, a tree of liberty was planted on what was called the Place de Montrouge. As part of the transformation of Paris under the Second Empire, Baron Haussmann had the square in front of the town hall of the 14th arrondissement developed and expanded. Opposite the town hall, the Brézin market was built in 1866. This covered market follows the model of the so-called Baltard market halls, like the Secrétan market hall in the 19th arrondissement and the Saint-Quentin market in the 10th arrondissement.
