Ruriko-in temple, Kyoto by Damien Douxchamps

Ruriko-in temple, Kyoto

A blast from the past from 2011: the typical sukiya architecture of Ruriko-in temple in Kyoto. At the time tourism in Kyoto was only starting to boom and it was possible to visit Ruriko-in and relax. Today it's a different story... Still beautiful and worth a peek though :-)

A rare snowy day in Hosen-in temple, Kyoto, Japan

I haven't posted a snow picture in almost a year: unacceptable! Here's a classic from the Ohara valley, just north of Kyoto city. Snow only falls for a few days per year in Kyoto, and it's usually gone by noon. But in Ohara the snow is thicker and stays longer, making it a great area to shoot in winter, both in its lovely temples and in the surrounding rural areas.

But the real star of the show is that little (?) susuki grass bouquet in front of the Silver Pavilion :-)

Zen excellence: Shisendo temple in autumn

A Kyoto favourite, although in recent years it has been quite hard to capture the peaceful nature of the place as it's rather packed in autumn.

Round windows anyone? ( ^^)v This place opened for visits for the first time this year during the peak autumn season. Not a great light on the day I booked my visit: I'll be back next year!

Round windows are a common part of Japanese architecture but are usually small. Large round _bay_ windows are much rarer. The lack of symmetry between the left and right parts is also a nice touch.

The best season for this place is when the rhododendrons boom, but this pic will have to do for now :-)

Not easy to get snowy pictures of Kyoto when there's only 1-2 days of snow per year and the snow is gone by noon. But it's worth the wait!

A place to meet and receive important foreign state guests, located on the imperial palace grounds. I wish I had a p(a)lace like that for my own parties ;-)

Nice view on the garden, even from deep within the temple. Was visiting for a photoshoot but arrived early and ended up getting more keepers from my extra time there ;-)
