“Parks first photographed the internationally renowned musician and conductor Leonard Bernstein for a ‘Life’ story on celebrated American composers. Bernstein is shown at Carnegie Hall, encircled by the auditorium lights, with a musical score tucked under one arm and a cigarette in the opposite hand. He looks down at the camera with a confidence befitting the 36-year-old maestro, whose career was skyrocketing. The 1950s were among Bernstein’s most prolific years. He composed several original symphonic works and film scores as well as four Broadway musicals, including ‘West Side Story’ in 1957. That same year he was appointed the first American-born music director of the New York Philharmonic.” [Accompanying text]

Nathan Van Cleave (1910-1970) was a prolific composer and orchestrator known for his work in film and television during the mid-20th century. For “Robinson Crusoe on Mars,” he composed an extraordinary musical score that contributed greatly to the film’s atmosphere and showcased his talent for creating music that perfectly complemented the science fiction genre. His music for this film has been appreciated by fans and critics alike, and the soundtrack has been released in various formats over the years, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy his compositions outside of the film.
Van Cleave worked on a variety of projects, including other science fiction films like “Conquest of Space” (1955), which was also directed by Byron Haskin. His music is remembered for its distinctive style and its ability to transport listeners to the otherworldly settings of the films he scored. Mathematics has been used for centuries to describe, analyse and create music. In this book, Leon Harkleroad explores the math-related aspects of music from its acoustical bases to compositional techniques to music criticism, touching on:
🎵 overtones, scales and tuning systems
🎵 the musical dice games attributed to Mozart and Haydn
🎵 the several-hundred-year-old style of bell-playing known as ringing the changes
🎵 the twelve-tone school of composition that strongly influenced music throughout the twentieth century
...and many other topics involving mathematical ideas from probability theory to Fourier series to group theory. He also relates some cautionary tales of misguided attempts to mix music and mathematics.
Both the mathematical and musical concepts are described in an elementary way, making the book accessible to general readers as well as to mathematicians and musicians of all levels. The book is accompanied by an audio CD of musical examples.
The author of the book, Leon Harkleroad gives frequent lectures on mathematics and music for the Mathematical Association of America and other groups. He has been published in many journals, and he has received the George Pólya Award from the MAA for one of his papers.
