1966 Ford Thunderbird - Gear Heads Car Show - Baxter, Tennessee

The fourth generation Ford Thunderbird is a large personal luxury car produced by Ford for the 1964 to 1966 model years. This generation of the Thunderbird was restyled in favor of a more squared-off, "formal" look. The only remnant of the Thunderbird's former sporty image was that the standard 390-cubic-inch 300 hp V8 engine needed nearly 11 seconds to push the heavy T-bird to 60 mph. The softly sprung suspension allowed considerable body lean, wallow, and float on curves and bumps. Contemporary testers felt that the Buick Riviera, Pontiac Grand Prix and Chrysler 300K were substantially more roadworthy cars, but the Thunderbird retained its leading market share.

1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am - Gear Heads Car Show - Baxter, Tennessee 2 by J.L. Ramsaur Photography

1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am - Gear Heads Car Show - Baxter, Tennessee 2

In 1977, Burt Reynolds starred in Smokey and the Bandit, a movie about a pair of guys smuggling beer - and a bride, across the states in a tractor trailer truck and a ‘77 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. The movie would go on to immortalize two careers: that of Burt Reynolds himself, and that of the Firebird Trans Am in all its glory, forever tying it to a film that can still be enjoyed to this day.

Pontiac’s beautiful Trans Am muscle car came equipped with a 6.6-liter V8, capable of 185 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The optional "T/A 6.6" engine made 200 hp and 325 lb-ft. Fitted with that optional engine, the Trans Am could run from 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds and the ¼ mile in 16 seconds, which was quick for the time. The '77 Trans Am could be had with a 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission.

One of the biggest reasons the Trans Am became so iconic is its truly beautiful and timeless design. In front, the ‘77 Trans Am featured a muscular hood that dipped down into a pointed grille with a spoiler below the bumper. The bumpers were color-keyed and artfully blended into the body, unlike most cars of the day with their chrome-plated battering rams. The headlights integrate beautifully into the vehicle’s split grille, completing the cohesive front end design. Down the side, both fenders flare out just enough to hover comfortably above the Trans Am’s gorgeous multi-spoke golden wheels, and a pair of vents flank each side of the vehicle. Finally, the rear slopes down directly from the roof to meet the Firebird’s ducktail, which is placed directly above and around the rear light panel.

Above is one of the finest examples of the Smokey and the Bandit Firebird Trans Am that I've ever seen...right down to the license plate on the front of the car. If you are a Bandit fan, enjoy this beautiful piece of Americana!

1958 Willys Maverick - Gear Heads Car Show - Baxter, Tennessee

In 1958, Willys and Kaiser Jeep introduced the Maverick model of the Willys Jeep Station Wagon, a more luxurious version of the two-wheel drive wagon. It could be had only with the four-cylinder engine. The main upgrades were in the introduction of two-tone paint with matching interior in two tones and the standard AM radio. It was distinguished by its extra stainless steel trim ring under the windows. The Maverick name came from the TV series of the same name starring James Garner that debuted in September 1957, of which Willys was a sponsor. The new Jeep model debuted in 1958 with an advertised price of $1,895.00.

1965 Rambler Marlin - Gear Heads Car Show - Baxter, Tennessee by J.L. Ramsaur Photography

1965 Rambler Marlin - Gear Heads Car Show - Baxter, Tennessee

The Rambler Marlin remains a rare sight in the world of classic cars, but the car's utterly unique appearance makes them a welcome visitor to any venue. The original concept for the Marlin came in the aerodynamic form of the Rambler Tarpon that debuted at the 1964 Chicago Auto Show, where Richard Teague's design marked a radical departure from the normally conservative look of Rambler's and AMC's offerings. While a bit smaller and lacking some of the refinement of the production Marlin, the Tarpon was essentially the same basic concept: a pillarless coupe that fell somewhere near the personal luxury coupe market. The most striking feature is the sloped fastback roofline that terminates at the rear bumper. That long aerodynamic "teardrop" shape harkened back to mid-century designs like AMC's predecessor, the Nash Airflyte.

Built on a convertible Rambler American, the Rambler Tarpon toured the country on the auto show circuits and came back with favorable enough reactions that AMC president Roy Abernethy greenlit production of the car with a new name, Marlin, for the 1965 model year. However, the Marlin's first two years of production didn't result in high sales volume, but with the introduction of a new AMC platform in 1967, the Marlin got a redesign on the Ambassador's wider track width and wheelbase. That new body included a redesigned roofline and a smaller C-pillar. The company branding also switched all Rambler badging to AMC in 1967, making the '67 officially the "AMC Marlin." Sales struggled with only a few more than 2,000 being sold in 1967 and Marlin production ended.
