Rare Individual

A young and an adult white-fronted bee-eater (Merops bullockoides).

Normally the adults have a red throat, so I wondered for some time what this one with a yellow throat was. Everything else was similar with the white-fronted bee-eaters, and I didn't find other species that were more similar.

But in an ID group, I learned that those with a yellow throat are a rare variety of the white-fronted bee-eaters.

Bee-Eater Surroundings

A bee-eater (Merops apiaster) memory from Greece in May. It's sitting in a Jerusalem thorn (Paliurus spina-christi).

Not at all the best photo I got of them, but I wanted to show more of the surroundings they live in.

Little Bee-Eaters by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

Little Bee-Eaters

Last week we actually didn't meet any little bee-eaters (Merops pusillus) like this, in Masai Mara.

Last year we met them many places there, in addition to three other bee-eater species.

This year we only met serveral white-fronted bee-eaters, but they gave us many nice photos though.

I don't know if it was the time of year or the dryer weather that gave us less birds this time. But it was interesting to meet more of our own bird species, that had migrated for winter.

The Sound of Bee-Eaters by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Sound of Bee-Eaters

Some video clips I took, white photographing European bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) in northern Greece in May. (You can see the one to the left eating a bee at the start.)

Even though I'm not good at video, it was fun to catch the sounds of all the maybe hundreds of bee-eaters flying around the field, catching bees.

Beautiful World by Ranveig Marie Photography

Beautiful World

Some beautiful European bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) from Greece three months ago.

Today is World Photography Day, and I have photographed some butterflies and dragonflies in the sunshine, for the annual book with photos from Norway taken today. I will also go to photograph a two year old and his family at the beach now, and maybe I will end the day by photographing some wading birds as well, in the evening light.

Kenyan Birds by Ranveig Marie Photography

Kenyan Birds

My presentation at the Ornithological Society last night, was mostly about the Kenyan birds. Here's one of them - the white-fronted bee-eater (Merops bullockoides), with its breakfast one morning in Masai Mara.

Although it was mostly open savannas there, we suddenly drove into green areas filled with birds, that felt like a taste of Paradise ツ

European Bee Eater (Merops Apiaster)

This photograph was taken in Anantnag, Jammu & Kashmir.

The European Bee-eater, Merops apiaster, is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family Meropidae. It breeds in southern Europe and in parts of north Africa and western Asia. It is strongly migratory, wintering in tropical Africa, India and Sri Lanka. This species occurs as a spring overshoot north of its range, with occasional breeding in northwest Europe.

This species, like other bee-eaters, is a richly-coloured, slender bird. It has brown and yellow upper parts, whilst the wings are green and the beak is black. It can reach a length of 27–29 cm (10.6–11.4 in), including the two elongated central tail feathers. Sexes are alike

These bee-eaters are gregarious, nesting colonially in sandy banks, preferably near river shores, usually at the beginning of May. They make a relatively long tunnel in which the 5 to 8, spherical white eggs are laid around the beginning of June. Both the male and the female take care of the eggs, which are brooded for about 3 weeks. These birds also feed and roost communally.
