Sequoyah Statue - Calhoun, GA

There are two essentially identical statues of Sequoyah in Calhoun. This one is at the 1976 Bicentennial Park next to the Calhoun-Gordon County Library, which was originally placed on the lawn of the College Street School in 1913.

Here's the other one located in a small triangular park along US11:

The statue is made from a mold by the J.L. Mott Iron Works of Trenton, New Jersey. This design, listed as "No. 53 Indian Chief" in an 1872 Demuth catalog, was originally a generic Native American chief figure used for cigar store displays. This particular casting was one of several identical replicas found around the country, showcasing the widespread use of this mold for public monuments.

Calhoun Street

The street to McKenna has been torn up for some time, and just when I thought I could come in from the Claiborne side, no, I could NOT!! And it's SO narrow! Worse than ever!! This is coming in from Fontainebleau. NOT great yet . . . but we will get there. Eventually. There are SO many mangled streets and bad bad potholes in the city; ours is just a minor ordeal.
