subsiding Stafford Hill by Philip Watson

subsiding Stafford Hill

I went down to the sawmill at Payhembury the other morning to get some wood to make a new house sign - the old one had lasted about twenty years, but keeps falling off its post, and is getting altogether too ratty to last much longer. On the way back, I get a couple of pictures of the hill out of Broadhembury, where it climbs the escarpment on to the Blackdowns. The road is in a pretty poor condition: loads of deep potholes, and subsidence around the edges.

The Secrets of Spotted Lake (Explored) / Les secrets du lac tacheté

* Spotted Lake is a mysterious seasonal alkaline lake in southern British Columbia. It consists mainly of pale alkaline mud with hundreds of medium-sized potholes which are usually filled with water while the lake bed itself is moist but not under water. But all of that is subject to the dry and rainy seasons in this very hot and dry valley of BC. The lake is on the land of a First Nation which guards and cares for it. No trespassing is allowed. I made my images in a great hurry in late August without really being able to view the back of the camera in the dust and heat. I tried all sorts of ICM etc. techniques and was amazed by the results. This lake has been photographed thousands of times, including by the New York Times who did a wonderful job of it, with great drone pics of this drone-happy lake. My problem is that most of those snapshots leave me cold, even the drone pics after the first minute or so. I felt there was so much more to be explored and played with at this special place. (Note the animal tracks in the white mud all over the lake :)

Calhoun Street

The street to McKenna has been torn up for some time, and just when I thought I could come in from the Claiborne side, no, I could NOT!! And it's SO narrow! Worse than ever!! This is coming in from Fontainebleau. NOT great yet . . . but we will get there. Eventually. There are SO many mangled streets and bad bad potholes in the city; ours is just a minor ordeal.

I LIKE TO RUN AROUND ASSERTING that even within the dreary context of suburban landscapes of the U.S., the suburban landscapes of Metro Detroit are distinctively bleak.
