The DS/ID range was introduced in 1955. styled by Italian sculptor and industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni and French aeronautical engineer Andre Lefebvre considered futuristic it offered self levelling suspension and new standard in ride quality, handling and braking. Over its twenty year cycle it achieved sales of over 1.5 million with manufacture in Paris,France :: Mangualde, Portugal :: Slough, England :: Victoria, Australia :: Johannesburg, South Africa and Kroper Yugoslavia.
The DS maintained its size and shape throughout but frontal appearance changed in 1962 with a new aerodynamic nose and better ventilation through retaining its two open head lamps. Restyled again in 1967 with the twin head lights being faired into the into the wings under a smooth glass canopy with the inner set swivelling to allow the driver to see around bends.
The DS21 was introduced in 1965 with a 2175cc four cylinder five main bearing engine. Receiving a boost in power in 1970 with the introduction of Bosch fuel injection
The ID was replaced by the D Spécial and D Super in 1970, but these retained the lower specification position in the range. The D Super was available with the DS21 2175ccm engine and a 5 speed gearbox, and named the D Super 5.
The DS was successful in motorsports, particularly rallying, and won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1959, the 1000 Lakes in 1960 with Pauli Toivonen and was awarded a win in the 1966 Monte Carlo by the French organisers in favour of the BMC Mini, a Mini driven by a drunk driver Australian crashed into the DS that was leading the 1968 London–Sydney Marathon, 98 miles from the finish line and a DS won the gruelling 1974 London - Sahara - Munich World Cup Rally
