Hibernal Dance

Frozen in time, two frost 'fairies' seem to be engaged in an icy dance.

A bit of a cold snap, -28F (-33C) this morning.

Fanciful Frost Filigree

-28 F (-33 C) this morning. It's always fascinating to greet the tiny wonders of winter.

The different growth patterns of the frost are so varied, almost seeming to exhibit life of their own. Spiderwebs, leaves, flowers, exotic deep sea creatures....

Making Ice Fog at 56 Degrees Below Zero by Katy on the Tundra

Making Ice Fog at 56 Degrees Below Zero

Ice fog is easy to make when it's colder than -40, and you have boiling water. I used a small saucepan of boiling water.

Toss the boiling water into the air and the hot water instantly vaporizes, called 'flash freezing' and becomes a cloud of ice fog, with a crackle and a hiss.

Making Ice Fog

One of those things that's kind of fun and interesting to do, when it's -40 or colder outdoors.

Tossing hot water into the air hisses and pops, as the hot water turns to steam in the very cold air, then instantly freezes.

The snow came ... and went

It's such a rarity for us here on the south coast of the UK to have snow, most of the time it's just a memory of years gone by.
By midday it had stopped and rapidly thawed.

Frost Dragon by Katy on the Tundra

Frost Dragon

Denizen of the deep cold, a frost filigree dragon in flight appeared inside the glass panes of my patio door.

-42° this morning.

Dancing Frost

I see a spiderweb at the bottom, wings outstretched on either side taking flight, and ivy emerging all across the top.

Frost formation between the panes of my patio door glass, that we only get to see when temperature outdoors dips to -40 or colder.

Last two mornings made it down to -42°F (-41°C).

Frosted Nuthatch

Cold -42° morning takes it's toll on the tiny birds, including this red breasted nuthatch, who in spite of the cold needs to feed to stay alive.

Tiny breaths create frosty crust on his itty bitty head.

All the birds had frost on their litte faces this morning.
