Green engines at Ropley on 17 April.
Down at the station again today for some filming, and I couldn't resist photographing some green locos in the crisp spring light.
Class 20 D8059 was operating one of the service trains. LSWR 563 was on the shed pit road having recently arrived from Swanage. It will be featuring in the Watercress Line's Spring Gala.
And of course 35005 Canadian Pacific looking absolutely immaculate in Ropley Yard.

English Electric Class 20 pictured on the Mid Hants Railway (Watercress Line) at Alton. These 1,000 hp, 73 Tonne locomotives were commonly known as "Choppers" by railway men because they sounded like helicopters. Probably the sound signature of the 8 cylinders in line engine configuration (No doubt if they had just two giant cylinders, they would be called Chinooks, which is all we get flying around here!).
This loco was built in 1961 and is in excellent condition sounding very healthy and running with a remarkably clean exhaust when I took this photo.
